The Battle of Varna

According to Feridun Emecen, the Crusader army led by the Hungarians and the Ottomans met before Varna on 28 Receb 848 (10 November 1444). Hüsameddin ties the battle to 847; the source places the year one year later, in 848. The reason for the difference could not be determined.

According to the same entry, the Anatolian wing of the Ottoman army stood on the sultan's right, under the Beylerbeyi of Anatolia, Karaca Bey. The Hungarian attack fell on this wing, the wing collapsed, and Karaca Bey died fighting. On the Rumelian wing the horsemen of Şehâbeddin Şahin Pasha and the troops of Dâvud Bey held their ground. Murad II's own troops were also ineffective for a time, but the sultan did not leave the field. The Hungarian king Vladislav, charging at the sultan whom the janissaries were protecting, saw his horse fall into a ditch and was killed; this led to the dispersal of the Hungarian army. Bâlî Bey's name does not appear among the Ottoman commanders listed in the entry. Because the list names only the principal commanders, this is not a contradiction, but the statement that Bâlî Bey fell as a martyr at Varna could not be verified in the sources read.

Bâlî Bey and His Family

No mention of Bâlî Bey, his father Hamza Bey, his son Hüseyin Bey, or the mansion and gravestone in the Üçler quarter was found in other sources. The nickname "Bîçâr Paşazâde" in the text could not be found in the sources read either.
