In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was the son of Acem Alî Ağazâde Mustafa Bey, who had a quarter and a lineage in Amasya. Having attached himself to Şehzade Ahmed, the governor of Amasya, he rose under his patronage. In 916 [1510-11] he became guardian of Amasya.

Before this his ancestor had begun the construction of a fine and sound mosque in the Acem Alî quarter, completed it in the early part of the year 918 [1512-13], and endowed all his property for the expenses of this charity. Following this, he went with Sultan Ahmed Han to the war of his brother Sultan Selim Han. He died in the war that was fought.

His brother is el-Hâc Hamza Bey. His son, Îsâ Çelebi, famous as Keykoca, also endowed his property for the expenses of this mosque in 918. These two waqf deeds were seen in the possession of Şeyh Alizâde Abdullah Efendi, the imam of the mosque. Bâlî Bey's uncle was also Îsâ Bey.

Şehzade Ahmed and Selim's War

The "Sultân Ahmed Hân" of the text is Şehzade Ahmed, son of Bayezid II. According to Feridun Emecen, after Bayezid's abdication Selim became sultan; Ahmed first behaved like a ruler in Konya; when Selim crossed into Anatolia he went from Afyon to Ankara, then to Amasya and Dârende, and afterwards brought Amasya under his control again. Then he marched on Bursa and was defeated in the battle on the plain of Yenişehir; while fleeing he was caught and killed. Emecen gives the date of the battle as 8 Safer 919 (15 April 1513). Some sources give 24 April 1513.

Hüsameddin gives the date of this war in entry 487 as 918. By calculation, 918 ends in early March 1513, whereas according to Emecen the battle falls in the month of Safer of 919. The difference is a few months and is the result of a calculation. The names of the Amasya beys who died in this battle do not occur in the sources read.

The Mosque and the Family

No information on the Mosque of the Acem Alî quarter, Acem Alî Ağazâde Mustafa Bey, el-Hâc Hamza Bey, Îsâ Çelebi called Keykoca, Şeyh Alizâde Abdullah Efendi, or the waqf deeds was found in other sources. It is not clear in the text whose brother is meant by the sentence "His brother is el-Hâc Hamza Bey"; it is rendered here as Bâlî Bey's brother, but relating it to the ancestor who began the mosque is also possible.
