In Modern English

The registers in which the decisions and records of Ottoman courts were collected are called şer'iyye sicilleri (sharia court registers); they are among the most important sources used in social and local history. These registers contain the kadıs' official correspondence with the central state, the complaints and requests of people from different sections of society, imperial decrees and orders, and court rulings that reflect the social and economic life of the place. Studying them is of great importance for uncovering the family, economic, social and legal structure of the Ottoman state. As one of the most important sources of urban history, these registers have been used for many purposes: identifying state officials, reconstructing genealogies through waqf deeds and inheritance records, and establishing important events that came before the court.

The Amasya Court Registers

Court registers are one of the best ways of tracing the ordinary people of a city. Through records of sales, division of inheritances, waqf registrations and complaints, a person's name, neighbourhood, property and circle can be determined. Hüsameddin's mention of drawing family trees from waqf deeds and inheritance records suggests that an important part of the biographical and family information in the History of Amasya rests on these records.

No reliable information was found in other sources on the present state of the Amasya court registers. For this reason, where the registers are kept and which years they cover are not stated here.
