A Cross-Reference Entry

This entry is a cross-reference. Hüsameddin placed a record here according to the epithet "Ebu'l-Yümn" in the person's kunya, but left the actual biography to the letter "ayn" under the more common name Iydîzâde. The reader will find Âkif Mustafa Efendi's life in detail in that entry. The information below is a short introduction meant to link these two entries.

Iydîzâde Âkif Mustafa Efendi

Âkif Mustafa Efendi was born in Amasya in 1098 (1686) and died in Amasya in 1173 (1759-60). He took the nickname "Iydîzâde" from being the younger son of his father Bayram Efendi, who wrote poetry under the pen name Iydî. His father served as müderris at the Bayezid II Madrasa in Amasya and was a poet with a divan; his brother Iydîzâde Âtıf Ahmed Efendi was also a poet and müderris. Many scholars and müderrises came out of this family, which is also called Hacıbayramoğulları. Only the Râmiz biographical dictionary records him under the nickname Abdîzâde, which is the family name that the author of the book, Hüsameddin, also bore.

The sources describing Âkif Mustafa Efendi praise both his learning and his poetry. He was also known as "Koca Müftü" (the Great Mufti) and is remembered as a scholar with knowledge in medicine, hadith, exegesis and rhetoric. It is told that he went to Cairo to study hadith, went on the pilgrimage three times, taught at the Sultan Bayezid Madrasa on returning to Amasya, and served as mufti of Amasya for a long time. Toward the end of his life he withdrew from the muftiship and again served as müderris at the Bayezid II Madrasa. His grave is in the cemetery outside the walls of Amasya, on the Musalla road.

Among his works are cited an ordered Turkish divan and the Bedî'a, in thirty-two maqamat, which he wrote taking Harîrî's Makâmât as a model. The only known copy of the divan is in the Topkapı Palace and consists of 3 qasidas, 40 ghazals, 3 qıta, 1 lugaz and many rubais and müfreds. A chronogram for his death was composed with the line "Geldi yetmiş üçünde emr-i irci'î"; the line means "At seventy-three the command 'Return' came" and gives the year 1173.

The Family and the Rifâî Lineage of Lâdik

In the Arabic work Kitâbu'l-Mecmû' fi'l-meşhûd ve'l-mesmû' by Âkif Mustafa Efendi's grandson Âkifzâde Abdurrahim Efendi (d. 1221/1806), it is written that the lineage of his grandfather, called "Âkif Mustafa Efendi bin Ebî Muhammed Bayram Efendi el-Merzifonî," goes back to Seyyid Ahmed-i Kebîr er-Rifâî, who is buried in Lâdik. This is the family's own record; it has not been confirmed by other documents. Hüsameddin, a few entries later, also describes Ebûbekir Çelebi, one of the Rifâî sheikhs tied to the same tomb in Lâdik.
