In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was the son of es-Seyyid el-Hâc Süleyman Efendi, son of es-Seyyid el-Hâc Ali Efendi, mufti of Amasya. When his father, who was müderris (madrasa professor) of the Yakub Pasha Madrasa, died, he was still a student, and the madrasa was therefore given to someone else.

Deeply troubled by this, he applied himself to learning and to self-improvement with all the effort he could muster; he received an ijaza from Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi and taught public lessons. He then went to Istanbul, entered the career of the judges by examination, and after serving as deputy judge and judge in many towns and provinces, he died in 1217 [1802-03]. He was one of the scholars who served as judges.

Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi

Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi, named in the text, is mentioned in another entry of the same section of the book (Taşköprülü el-Hâc Emîn Mehmed Efendi) as the "teaching circle of the great scholar Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi in Amasya". He was therefore teaching in Amasya and gave an ijaza to at least two separate students. The book gives no further information about him in these two entries; his years of birth and death, his works and the madrasa in which he taught could not be found in the sources read.

Sought and Not Found

Searches for Emîn Mehmed Efendi, his father, the Yakub Pasha Madrasa and Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi turned up no article giving detailed information about these people. There is a study of the müderrises of Amasya based on Meşîhat Archive documents, but it deals with the müderrises of the reign of Abdülhamid II (1876-1909) and therefore does not cover a judge who died in 1217 (inference). No information on this person was found in other sources.
