The Yörgüç Pasha Mosque
The mosque of which Emîn Mehmed Efendi was kürsü şeyhi is the Yörgüç Pasha Mosque on the bank of the Yeşilırmak in Amasya. According to the inscription over the door it was built by Atabeg Yörgüç Pasha in 834 (1430). In some sources the year of construction is given as 1428; no record explaining the difference between the two dates was found. Yörgüç Pasha was a statesman who served as lala (tutor) to Prince Murad, son of Çelebi Mehmed, and later rose to the vizierate.
The building belongs to the group of mosques with tabhane rooms, that is, with a zaviye; it has no last-congregation porch. The section east of the entrance is thought to have been the lecture hall of the madrasa, which has not survived. The western section is arranged as a tomb and holds four marble sarcophagi belonging to Yörgüç Pasha and his family. Because the mosque stands on the bank of the Yeşilırmak it has been damaged by floods, and its interior has therefore been renewed; the original minaret is also gone and a plain wooden one has been built in its place.
