In Modern English

He is the son of Mehmed Çelebi of Merzifon. There he learned from Mevlânâ Saferşâh-ı Rûmî, one of the great scholars, became a ders-i âm (a teacher licensed to give lessons open to all) and became müderris (madrasa professor) at the Hacı Hasanzâde Madrasa. While mufti of Merzifon he died around 832 [1428-29]. He was one of the renowned scholars, a jurist and a zâhid (one who keeps away from worldly pleasures). He was seen as a witness in the supplement (zeyl) to the Bâyezîd Pasha endowment deed.

The Bâyezîd Pasha Endowment Deed and Its Supplement

According to the inscription of the Bayezid Pasha Mosque in Amasya, the mosque was built by Bayezid Pasha, one of the viziers of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed I, in Muharram 817 [April 1414]. An Arabic endowment deed of Bayezid Pasha, dated 11 Zilhicce 820 [19 January 1418] and missing its beginning, is known; supplements to this deed dated 821 [1418] and 823 [1420] also exist. A summary of the deed is carved in stone in the last-congregation porch of the mosque and on a rock near Kuşköprüsü. The supplement Hüsameddin mentions may be one of these known supplements; since it is not written which one, this is an inference, and the text of the supplements could not be examined in this research. Bayezid Pasha was sent against Prince Mustafa in the time of Murad II, was taken after most of his soldiers went over to the other side, and was killed the next day (1421).

The Madrasas of Merzifon

Among the endowment works of Merzifon in the Ottoman period are counted the Madrasa of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed (817 [1414]) in the Câmi-i Cedîd quarter, the soup kitchen and zâviye dated 822 [1419], the Medreseönü Mosque (830 [1427]) built by Murad II, and the Tâceddin İbrâhim Pasha Mosque (approximately 828 [1425]). The Hacı Hasanzâde Madrasa does not appear in this list and could not be found in the sources searched. In Merzifon there is a quarter called Hacı Hasan and a Hacı Hasan Mosque dated 1126 [1714]; whether this name is related to the founder of the madrasa could not be verified. No information was found either for his teacher Mevlânâ Saferşâh-ı Rûmî.
