In Modern English

He is from Amasya. He is the son of Sûlî Bey, one of the Kûmârulu Turks and of the tribal beys. Having learned from Mevlânâ Sadreddîn İsmâîl el-Malatî, one of the great judges, he became a ders-i âm (a teacher licensed to give lessons open to all), and after his teacher he was müderris of the Gıyâsiyye Madrasa and later chief judge (kadılkudât) of Amasya; he died after 618 [1221-22]. He was one of the great scholars and judges. His nephew Mevlânâ Bedreddîn İbrâhim el-Kimârî has been mentioned above.

The Gıyâsiyye Madrasa

A madrasa bearing the name Gıyâsiyye was not found in Amasya in the searches. Among the madrasas known to have been built in Amasya in the Seljuk period are those of Halifet Gazi (1209-10), Gökmedrese, Alaca Yahya and Ata Bey; Gıyâsiyye does not appear in these lists. That the name was given after the title Gıyâseddin of a Seljuk sultan is probable, but this is an inference and could not be verified. There is also no record on whether the madrasa stands today.

Relatives and Lineage

The text says that Evhadüddin Mahmud's nephew Bedreddîn İbrâhim el-Kimârî has been "mentioned above". The spellings Kûmârî and Kimârî differ; in the earlier entries of this volume no entry was found under the nisba Kimârî or Kûmârî. The entry may be under another heading, or it may be unfindable because of the difference in spelling. For the Kûmârulu Turks and for Sûlî Bey as well, no information was found in the sources.

Date of Death

Hüsameddin gives the date of death as "after the year 618", that is, 1221-22 is the last date at which the man is known to have been alive; the exact year of death is not known. No other record was found in the searches for a person holding the title of chief judge of Amasya.
