The Teachers' School and the Rüşdiye
The path described in this entry shows a period in which the madrasa tradition and the new type of school ran side by side. Eyyûb Sabri first attended the mosque lessons at Hagia Sophia and then moved on to a school that trained rüşdiye teachers. The first teachers' school of this kind in the Ottoman Empire was opened on 16 March 1848 in the Fatih district of Istanbul under the name dârülmuallimîn, with Ahmed Cevdet (Pasha) as its first director. In the provinces, teachers' schools continued to be opened from 1882 onward in various provincial centres, Amasya among them. The text does not make clear which school Hüsameddin means; since Eyyûb Sabri was in Istanbul, the school in Istanbul comes first to mind, but this is an inference.
Rüşdiye schools were middle-level schools above the sıbyan (neighbourhood) school. The first rüşdiye was opened in Istanbul in 1847, and the Maârif-i Umûmiyye Regulation of 1869 provided for a boys' rüşdiye in every settlement of more than 500 households, with a course of four years above the sıbyan school. The rüşdiye schools of Bandırma and İnegöl are links of this system in the Marmara region.
The Dates Hüsameddin Gives
The dates in the entry are consistent with one another. A post at Bandırma beginning in 1306 and lasting twelve years brings us to 1318, and the five years that follow at İnegöl bring us to 1323. In the Gregorian calendar this is a teaching career of seventeen years, roughly from 1888-89 to 1905-06. Taking the birth year as 1278 [1861-62], his age at death was about forty-four (a calculation).
No information was found in other sources on Eyyûb Sabri's family, on the epithet "Pelidzâde", or on records of the schools where he served.
