The Founder of the Teberrükzâde Waqf
The name at the head of the waqf in the entry is told separately elsewhere in Hüsameddin's book. Teberrük Çelebi was the son of Ahmed of Kedağra; he studied in Merzifon under Ferîdeddîn Mehmed bin İbrâhim ed-Devvânî and settled there, gave general lessons, became müderris of the Hacı Hasanzâde Madrasa, and died after 865 [1460-61]. His son Ömer Çelebi and grandson Şemseddîn Ahmed Efendi were also scholars, and their line was called "Teberrükzâde". According to Hüsameddin, Şemseddîn Ahmed Çelebi made his property in Merzifon a waqf, and his children became its trustees. This record shows that Eyyûb Ağa was tied to a family and a waqf inheritance reaching back about three centuries.
Differences in the Chain of Trustees
The succession of trustees of the same waqf is also given in Hüsameddin's entry "Teberrük Çelebi", and there are some differences between that entry and the other "Eyyûb Ağa-Seydîzâde" entry on the same page. In the Teberrük Çelebi entry Sa'dî Çelebi became trustee in 1105 [1693-94] and on his death in 1139 his son Mehmed Efendi took his place; in this entry the person who takes the place of the father who died in 1139 is Eyyûb Ağa, and the father is called Seydî Çelebi. Seydî and Sa'dî may be a variation of spelling for the same person; this is an inference. In the Teberrük Çelebi entry Alî Efendi dies in 1221 and his sons Ahmed and Feyzullâh follow him; in this entry Alî Efendi dies in 1216 and Eyyûb and Feyzullâh follow him. The other "Eyyûb Ağa-Seydîzâde" entry also gives 1216 as the year of death and calls the trustee who died in 1248 "Eyyûb Ağa"; the Teberrük Çelebi entry calls the trustee who died in 1248 "Ahmed Efendi". These differences suggest that the same persons are named by two different names, but which is right cannot be determined without looking at the records. In addition, in this entry Feyzullâh Ağa is counted as having died in 1241, while in the Teberrük Çelebi entry Feyzullâh still appears as trustee after the death of Ahmed Efendi in 1248. This inconsistency could not be resolved.
Kapıcıbaşı and Mütesellim
According to Yücel Özkaya's entry on the mütesellim, the mütesellim was the official who, as deputy of a beylerbeyi or sanjak governor, stood in for him and collected taxes; in some cases mutasarrıfs and kapıcıbaşıs of the Sublime Porte were also given the mütesellimlik. In the nineteenth century, in the drive for centralization, the principle was introduced that mütesellims be chosen especially from Istanbul and from among high-ranking officials such as kapıcıbaşıs. That Feyzullâh Ağa is named both as kapıcıbaşı and as mütesellim of Merzifon fits this practice; in which years he served as mütesellim is not written. That Sa'dî Efendi, brother of Alî Efendi, died in Istanbul as a hâcegân of the imperial divan also shows the family's tie with the centre; Hüsameddin uses the same hâcegân rank for the defterdar Amasyalızâde İsmâîl Efendi.
After the Waqf
The last link in the chain of trustees is Hâfız Hasan Efendi, who died in 1294 [1877-78], and his sons Mehmed and Mustafa Efendi. A search for the present state of the waqf and for later generations of the Teberrükzâde family found no record.
