Eyyûb Ağa — Seydîzâde
Encyclopedia · History of Amasya, Volume 7, p. 388 • Edited by: Prof. Dr. Safi ARPAGUŞ- Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hakkı TURABİ
In Modern English
He was from Merzifon. He was the son of Alî Efendi, trustee of the waqf of Teberrükzâde Şemseddîn Çelebi; Alî Efendi was the son of Eyyûb Ağa, who was the son of Seydî Çelebi. On his father's death in 1216 [1801-02] he became trustee and entered the ranks of the notables of Merzifon. When he died in 1248 [1832-33] the trusteeship passed to his sons Mehmed and Alî Ağa and to Sa'dullâh Efendi, son of Feyzullâh Ağa. When Mehmed Ağa died in 1255 [1839-40] and Alî Ağa in 1281 [1864-65], the trusteeship was given to Hâfız Hasan Efendi alone.
Notes and Research
Old Words in the Text
- mütevellî: the person who runs a waqf
- tevliyet: being trustee, the trusteeship of a waqf
- eşrâf: notables
- müstakillen: alone, without partners
- Çelebi: in this context a title given to respected, educated persons
A Link in the Same Chain
The entry gives the second half of the chain of trustees told in the other "Eyyûb Ağa-Seydîzâde" entry on the same page. Eyyûb, the son of Alî Efendi there, is the Eyyûb Ağa of the heading here; on his father's death in 1216 he became trustee together with his brother Feyzullâh, and he died in 1248. After him the trusteeship was shared among his sons Mehmed and Alî Ağa and Sa'dullâh Efendi, son of Feyzullâh Ağa, and this sharing lasted until Alî Ağa's death in 1281. Thus the waqf was run in partnership by two branches until 1281, and then passed to Sa'dullâh Efendi's son Hâfız Hasan Efendi. The other entry also writes that the same Hâfız Hasan Efendi died in 1294 [1877-78] and that his sons Mehmed and Mustafa Efendi followed him; on this point the two entries complete each other.
Comparison with the Teberrükzâde Entry
Hüsameddin gives the same chain in the entry "Teberrük Çelebi" too, and that record differs from this entry on some points. In that entry the trustee who died in 1248 is called "Ahmed Efendi"; in this entry the person who died in the same year is Eyyûb Ağa. That the successors in both are Mehmed and Alî Efendi and Sa'dullâh, son of Feyzullâh, suggests that the same person is named by two different names; this is an inference. There are other differences: in the Teberrük Çelebi entry the person who dies in 1255 is Sa'dullâh Efendi and Mehmed Efendi dies in 1285; in this entry the one who dies in 1255 is Mehmed Ağa and Sa'dullâh's death is not mentioned at all. Alî Efendi's death is 1216 in this entry and in the other Seydîzâde entry, and 1221 in the Teberrük Çelebi entry. The common point is that Alî Ağa dies in 1281 and the trusteeship ends up with Hâfız Hasan Efendi. Which of the differences is right cannot be determined without looking at the waqf records.
The Waqf and the Town
What the Teberrükzâde waqf consisted of is not written in this entry; in another entry Hüsameddin says that Şemseddîn Ahmed Çelebi made his property in Merzifon a waqf. According to Mehmet Öz, Merzifon was a town shaped by its madrasas, mosques, small mosques, lodges, tombs and various charitable foundations; the role of waqfs in the life of the town continued in later centuries. That the chain of trustees can be followed without a break into the second half of the nineteenth century and beyond is an example of this continuity. No record was found in the sources read on the present state of the waqf or on the descendants of Hâfız Hasan Efendi.
