The Arrangement of the Chapters
This heading opens the second chapter of the second part, in which persons are arranged by the order of letters. The author gathers together those whose names begin with the letter bâ and, in his own words, summarises only the respects of each that matter for history. The entries in this chapter include, in order, Baba İlyâs, Baba Alî Çelebi, Baba Mehmed Çelebi, Bâbûk Şâh, Batuk Bey, Bakır Mehmed Efendi and Bâkî Paşa. That the preceding chapter contains persons named Eyyûb suggests that the first chapter was reserved for names beginning with the letter alif; this is an inference and is not stated in the text.
On the Work and Its Author
Hüseyin Hüsâmeddin Yasar was born in Amasya in 1869 and died in Istanbul in 1939. Amasya Tarihi is in fact a work of twelve volumes; only four of them could be printed in Istanbul between 1912 and 1928. In the copy purchased by the Amasya Municipality in 1979 the fifth volume is lost; volumes six to twelve were in manuscript at the time the encyclopedia entry was written. This volume appears in the Amasya Municipality edition of 2022. Many historians have appreciated the value of the work; on the other hand, the author's habit of mostly not naming his sources and of drawing excessive etymological comparisons on some subjects has led to hesitation about the scholarly value of what he wrote.
