In Modern English

He was from Ladik. It was seen in the Tedâvül and Mukâta'a Registers that he was the son of Çayırkadızâde Hacı Mustafa Ağa, one of the notables of that place, who in turn was the son of Hacı Ahmed Efendi. After his father's death he became ayan of Ladik.

In 1181 he went to the Russian war with soldiers raised from Ladik and showed valor. In 1186 he became purchasing agent (mübayaacı) of the province of Sivas, gave his daughter in marriage to Seyyid Abdullah Ağa of Ladik, one of the rikâb ağas in the Enderun, and went to Istanbul.

In 1194 he became başbâki kulu with the rank of kapıcıbaşı. On the execution of the governor of Sivas, Dağıstânî Ali Pasha, he was charged with seizing his property and what he left behind and went to Sivas; on his return he became gurebâ-yı yemîn ağası, in Rebiülâhir 1202 second mîrâhûr, and in 1204 kapıcılar kethüdâsı.

Meanwhile, since his son-in-law Seyyid Abdullah Ağa had become silahdâr, in 1207 he became başbâki kulu in the imperial divan and in 1209 first mîrâhûr, approaching the rank of vizier. But when in Rebiülevvel 1210 his son-in-law was dismissed from the silahdârship and sent into retirement, he too left his post, and he died on the twenty-first of Receb 1216. He is buried at Haydar Pasha. His mansion in the Çatladı Kapı neighborhood passed to his son Şâkir Bey and his daughter Âdile Hanım. His brother is Hacı İsmâil Ağa.

The Office of Başbâki Kulu and Mîrâhûrluk

The başbâki kulu was a leading finance official in the collection of state revenues; he headed one of the offices attached to the defterdar (chief treasurer). The bâki kulus under his orders investigated and collected from those who owed the treasury and did not pay, and from those with state property in their custody. He could also be assigned to determine the property left by certain wealthy persons who had died. The Sivas assignment in the text, being sent after the execution of Dağıstânî Ali Pasha to seize his property, matches the nature of this office.

The mîrâhûr was the official at the head of the stable organization that looked after the horses of the palace and the army. When business grew among the Ottomans, the number of these officials rose to two, and they were called the first and second mîrâhûr. The "mîrâhûr-ı sânî" in the text is the second, and the "mîrâhûr-ı evvel" the first mîrâhûr.

Hüsameddin narrates this man's rise through a family tie: when his son-in-law Abdullah Ağa became silahdâr he rose too, and when his son-in-law was dismissed he left his post. Kapıcıbaşılık was also a title that could be given in this period as a rank or title (pâye); the kapıcıbaşılık and the başbâki kulu office in the text bring this practice to mind, but this is an inference. No information about the man himself or the Çayırzâde family was found in other sources.
