In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was a descendant of Bolulu Hacı İbrâhim Efendi, trustee (mütevelli) of the waqf of Yakut Pasha in Amasya, and was the son of Hacı Mahmûd Efendi, who died in 1181 while serving as trustee of this waqf.

He entered the Enderun at a young age and learned there learning, knowledge, and fine manners. Rising step by step, he became dülbend ağası and, in the reign of Sultan Abdülhamîd I, sır kâtibi (secretary of secrets).

After the death of the said sultan in 1203, he was sent out to the provinces as a madrasa professor; in 1214 he became Mollah of Üsküdar. He died in 1215. He was a scholar and gentle in temperament. He endowed all his books to the Abdüllatîf Efendi Library in Amasya. Today his books are in that library.

Enderun Education and the Professorate

The Enderun is the palace school that, from the middle of the fifteenth century, was the most important official educational institution outside the madrasa, and in which civil and military administrators were trained. The subject of this entry in Hüsameddin, the son of an Amasya waqf trustee, entered this school as a child and rose as far as the secretaryship of secrets under Abdülhamîd I. After the sultan's death, in 1203 [1788-89], he was sent out to the provinces as a madrasa professor; the book does not give the reason for this departure.

There is a gap among the dates in the text: nothing is said about the eleven years from 1203 to 1214. Then come the mollahship of Üsküdar (1214 [1799-1800]) and his death (1215 [1800-01]).

His endowing his books to the Abdüllatîf Efendi Library in Amasya shows his tie to the city. Hüsameddin writes that the books are there "today"; this sentence belongs to the period in which the book was written, and the present-day situation needs separate research. No information was found in other sources on the Yakut Pasha waqf, the Bolulu family, or this person.
