In Modern English
He was the son of Seyyid Hacı Abdurrahman Efendi, deputy of the nakîbüleşrâf of Amasya, who in turn was the son of Hâfız Mehmed Efendi; he was the nephew of Seyyid Hacı İbrâhim Efendi, whose life is written above. Having studied under scholars, he became pulpit sheikh (kürsü şeyhi) of the İbâdullah Mosque, and while he was a member of the councils as guild sheikh (esnaf şeyhi) in 1207, he died in Zilkade 1216. He was a scholar and a preacher. His sons are Seyyid Hâfız Mehmed and İsmâil.
Hâfız Seyyid İsmâil Efendi became guild sheikh and died in 1247. He was famous as "Kabasakal." His son Seyyid İbrâhim Edhem Efendi was one of the naibs. His son is our brother İsmâil Sıdkı Bey, who is still living and who was Minister of Justice in the Constitutional period. A Family of Seyyids and Guild Sheikhs in Amasya
The entry lists a family of four generations: İbrâhim Efendi, pulpit sheikh of the İbâdullah Mosque and guild sheikh (d. 1216 [1801-02]); his son İsmâil Efendi (d. 1247 [1831-32]); his grandson İbrâhim Edhem Efendi; and his son İsmâil Sıdkı Bey. The guild sheikh was the person at the top of the guild organization who mostly conducted ceremonial matters. Here this office is seen in the same family for two generations.
The footnote in the text is noteworthy. The editors of the book note, regarding the uncle İbrâhim Efendi, "whose life is written above," that it was understood that he was not a guild sheikh but one of the ulema, and that he died in 1221. In the immediately preceding entry, however, it is written that İbrâhim Efendi — Şeyhzâde became guild sheikh in place of his father. The footnote suggests that Hüsameddin may have confused two İbrâhim Efendis; the text does not show with certainty which is meant.
Hüsameddin refers to İsmâil Sıdkı Bey as "our brother" and writes that he was Minister of Justice in the Constitutional period. In a survey made in other sources regarding this person, no record was found confirming his name as an Amasya-born Minister of Justice; the information rests only on Hüsameddin. No information was found in other sources on the other members of the family either.
