In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of Mustafa Ağa, the cizyedâr of Amasya (the official who collected the jizya tax from non-Muslims). He studied with the well-known scholar Kadızâde Mehmed İlmî Efendi, known as "Küçük Hâce"; while serving as a jizya scribe at his father's side, and later as a scribe of the council, he died in the month of Zilkade of the year 1078 [1668]. The Müderris writes in his "Abdî Efendi Tezkiresi" that he was a scribe of very fine appearance and character, of flawless handwriting and bearing, a poet and a lover of learning. His exchange of verses and conversation with Hasan Kudsî Dede, the sheikh of the Mevlevi lodge, was famous.

The Poet-Scribe of Amasya

İlhâmî Hasan Çelebi is one of the poets named in Hüsameddin's Amasya Tarihi. According to a study of the work, the book mentions nearly five hundred poets and gives detailed information on about three hundred of them; in this respect it can also be read as an anthology of poets. The same study counts "İlhâmî Hasan Çelebi-Cizyedârzâde" among the poets in the seventh volume. The nickname "cizyedârzâde" comes from his father's occupation.

The text gives as its source for İlhâmî the anthology of Müderris Abdî Efendi, which collected the poets of Amasya. Hüsameddin counts this anthology and the supplementary anthology of Şeyh Alizâde Hafız Ahmed Rüşdü Efendi among the main sources of his book and states that he took much information and many sample poems from the two works. Describing Abdî Efendi as "a scholar, a man of merit, a poet, with fine talik handwriting, a calligrapher, an Amasya historian," Hüsameddin records that he collected the poets of Amasya and their poems and wrote an anthology, that he had obtained a copy of it, but that this copy burned. For this reason the information in the text has reached us through Hüsameddin from a work that is no longer available.

No information was found in the other sources read on İlhâmî's poems, on his teacher Kadızâde Mehmed İlmî Efendi, on his father Mustafa Ağa, or on Hasan Kudsî Dede.
