In Modern English

He was from İlarslan. He was the son of Alp Arslanzâde Ali Bey, one of the Ottoman beys. In the reign of Yıldırım Sultan Bâyezîd Khan he was rewarded with a large zeamet; in the war against Timur he showed valor in the wing of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed and won Çelebi Sultan's favor.

In 805 [1402-03] he came to Amasya with Çelebi Sultan Mehmed and became one of the beys in his retinue. In 816 [1413-14], when Çelebi Sultan became sole sultan, he was counted among the great beys, and he died after the year 824 [1421]. His sons were Ali, Hüseyin and Abdüllatîf Çelebi. Ali Çelebi had been one of the emîns (officials who ran state affairs) at the conquest of Istanbul. Hüseyin Bey is among the beys. Abdüllatîf Bey is also famous as "Latîf Şâh."

Çelebi Mehmed's Years in Amasya

The "Timur war" of the text is the battle fought near Ankara on 28 July 1402 between Yıldırım Bayezid and Timur. After this defeat a struggle for the throne began among Bayezid's sons, lasting from 1402 to 1413. Prince Mehmed Çelebi withdrew after the battle to the Amasya and Sivas region and established his rule there; he conducted his struggle with his brothers from this region. Hüsameddin's linking of Alp Arslan Bey with this prince's arrival in Amasya fits this historical course. Mehmed Çelebi became sole ruler in 1413 and remained on the throne until 1421; the text's note "after the year 824" falls on this same year.

Who Alp Arslan Bey Was

Hüsameddin had announced in the previous entry, when describing the İlarslan farm, that "Ali Beyzâde Alp Arslan Bey appears below." According to the genealogy given there, Ali Çelebi, son of the Seljuk prince Alp Arslan, had a son, and he is the Alp Arslan Bey who is the subject of this entry. This line of descent does not conflict with the dates: the first Alp Arslan died around 768 [1366-67], while his grandson took part in the war of 1402. Verification of the line against another document could not be done in the sources read.

No information was found in the sources read on the location and size of Alp Arslan Bey's zeamet, on Ali Çelebi's duty at the conquest of Istanbul, or on the origin of Abdüllatîf Bey's nickname "Latîf Şâh."
