The Calligrapher Abdullah Efendi
The entry calls the subject's son "the famous calligrapher Abdullah Efendi." Among the calligraphers who came from Amasya there is an artist with this name, known as Abdullah Amâsî. His dates of birth and death are not known; from the nisba Amâsî it is understood that he was from Amasya. Taking into account that he lived to the age of eighty and that a piece of his calligraphy dated 1518 exists, it is suggested that he was born in the time of Fâtih (1451-1481) and died in the time of Yavuz Sultan Selim (1512-1520). He was a relative and probably a student of Sheikh Hamdullah Efendi (d. 1520), and after Hamdullah's death he trained his son Mustafa Dede. He came to Istanbul in the time of Bayezid II (1481-1512).
No record stating that this calligrapher was the son of Zilelioğlu was found in the sources read. That the two are the same person does not contradict the chronology: the father died after 864 [1459-60], and it is possible that the son was born in Fâtih's time. Still, this is an inference and not certain.
Trade and Notables in Amasya
Amasya developed physically especially from the middle of the fifteenth century to the beginning of the sixteenth. The years in which Zilelioğlu lived fall in this period of growth. Hüsameddin's phrase "a'yân-ı tüccâr" places the family in a stratum enriched by trade and influential in the city. The kind of trade the family carried on, the origin of the epithet "Zilelioğlu" (whether there is a link with Zile), and İzzeddin Hasan and Alâeddin Ali Çelebi could not be found in the sources read.
