In Modern English

He was the son of Ali Bey, one of the zeamet holders of Amasya. He too was a zeamet holder and became sanjak governor (mîrlivâ) during the stewardship (kethüdâlık) of Hacı Beyzâde Mustafa Pasha. He died in the war of 1075 [1664-65] in the retinue of Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha.

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • züamâ: holders of zeamets
  • kethüdâ: steward, the deputy and assistant who ran the affairs of a vizier or a high official
  • mîrlivâ: sanjak governor
  • ma'iyyet: being in someone's service, in his retinue

The War of 1075

Hüsameddin does not give the place of the war, but his mention of Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha's retinue places it within the years of the Austrian campaign. According to the TDV entry on Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha, the grand vizier besieged and took Uyvar in 1663 and the next year met the Austrian and allied army at St. Gotthard on the Raab river. The Ottoman sources describe this battle, fought on 8 Muharrem 1075 [1 August 1664], as a small skirmish, while Western sources write that the Ottoman forces were destroyed. Ahmed Pasha conducted peace talks with the Austrian envoy at Vasvár on 16 Muharrem [9 August]. It is not stated whether İlyâs Bey died in this battle or in another engagement of the same campaign, so nothing certain can be said; no link has been established other than that the year 1075 coincides with Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha's Austrian campaign. Since Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha set out on the Cretan campaign on 11 Zilkade 1076 [15 May 1666], the war of 1075 cannot be the Cretan campaign; this conclusion rests on the arithmetic of the years and is an inference.

His Place in the Family

İlyâs Bey is the son of the man called "his brother Ali Bey" in the preceding entry (no. 286) of the same volume. Mustafa Pasha appears as the member of this family who reached the rank of vizier; when the stewardship was held is not in the entry. No information on this İlyâs Bey was found in other sources.
