In Modern English
He was a native of Amasya. One of the notables, he was the son of Mehmed Bey, son of Ali Bey, called Gürcüzâde, administrator (mütevelli) of the Torumtay Waqf, and the brother of Hacı İbrâhim Bey. Through his grandmother he descended from Torumtay and Kaya Paşa. For this reason, when his father died in 1116 [1704-05], he became administrator of their waqfs and entered the ranks of the notables (a'yân).
But for years he attended the court to settle the dispute over the trusteeship with his cousins on his mother's side, Hâfız Hasan and İbrâhim Efendi, and was dismissed and reappointed twice. From 1118 [1706-07] he was a member of the Council of Notables and Pilgrims (Meclis-i a'yân ve hâciyân).
In 1134 [1721-22] he became chief notable (baş a'yân) and, silencing his opponents with his influence and money, became sole administrator in 1135 [1722-23]. In 1136 [1723-24] he was removed from the post of chief notable. He died suddenly in Safar 1137 [1724]. His sons are Hacı Mehmed, Ömer and Ahmed Ağa. His grandson is Osman Paşa.

Torumtay and His Waqf
Seyfeddin Torumtay, founder of the Torumtay Waqf, was the commander appointed governor of Amasya in the time of the Anatolian Seljuk sultan Gıyâseddin Keyhusrev II. The tomb he had built is dated 677 (1278-79); the Gökmedrese (Torumtay Mosque) adjoining the tomb was used, according to its waqf deed, as both madrasa and mosque, and since the waqf deed bears the date 665 (1266-67), construction is taken to have been completed by that year at the latest. The building has the traits of Seljuk architecture: closed to the outside, with thick, massive cut-stone walls; its carved door leaves in the kündekâri technique are now in the Amasya Museum. The Torumtay waqf deed has also been published by İsmet Kayaoğlu.
The relation between the chain of trusteeship Hüsameddin describes and the management conditions in Torumtay's waqf deed is not discussed in the sources that could be read; what is known of the waqf's state in 1116 is therefore only the account in the entry.
Kaya Paşa and the Claim of Descent
Hüsameddin ties the family to descent from Torumtay and Kaya Paşa through the grandmother. While the sources confirm Torumtay's place in Amasya, who Kaya Paşa was and the family's line of descent could not be verified in the searches. The litigation with his cousins that went on for years shows how much the claim of descent mattered for the administration of the waqf, but the records of the case could not be read.
Notable Rank and the Gürcüzâde Family
The entry briefly recounts the rise and fall of a family of notables in early eighteenth-century Amasya: his entry into the council of notables in 1118, his post as chief notable in 1134, his removal from it in 1136 and his sudden death in 1137. Although the family tree Hüsameddin lists includes a date of 1157 [1744-45] and place names such as "Cûî Bağı," the lines of the diagram in the text are scattered and cannot be read as a complete genealogy. The identity of the grandson Osman Paşa could not be established in the searches.
What the Search Could Not Find
No information was found in the sources that could be read on the Gürcüzâde family, the Council of Notables and Pilgrims, or Kaya Paşa.
