What a Nüzül Emini Was

In the Ottoman treasury, nüzül was an in-kind tax levied on grain such as wheat and barley to feed an army going on campaign. The route was fixed in advance, and the grain demanded was either delivered to the nüzül emini present with the army or stored in granaries built for military purposes along the way. Collection, transport and delivery were generally the responsibility of the kadıs; at times officials sent from the center also collected it.

The year 1101 (1689-90), when Sarı Beyzâde took this post, falls in the years when the Ottoman army was campaigning on the Austrian front. It is known that Fâzıl Mustafa Paşa set out on his first campaign in Rumelia in Shawwal of the same year (July 1690). But no record could be read showing which campaign the post Hüsameddin gives was tied to, so no connection should be drawn.

Who Was Yusuf Paşa

Hüsameddin mentions the Yusuf Paşa whose steward Sarı Beyzâde became only by this name; the pasha's post, rank and full name are not given in the entry. No person matching this information could be identified in the searches. The place and events of the ten years of service are therefore unknown.
