In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was the son of İbrâhim Paşa, son of Mütedeyyin Pîrî Ağa, who was killed by the people in 1099 [1687-88] while warden of Temeşvar Fortress. He was born in Amasya while his father was administrator (mütevelli) of the sultan's waqfs. In 1097 [1685-86] he served as steward (kethüda) during his father's governorship of Damascus, and in 1099 as kapıcıbaşı.

In Rabi' al-Awwal 1106 [1694-95], when his elder brother Bıyıklı Mehmed Paşa became governor of Jeddah and Abyssinia with the rank of vizier, he became his steward; in 1108 [1696-97], when his brother became governor of Konya, at his request he became governor (mutasarrıf) of Şarki Karahisar with the rank of mîr-i mîrân.

In 1110 [1698-99], when his brother became the husband of Fatma Sultan and governor of Damascus, he became warden of İnebahtı with the rank of vizier. But because he could not govern it well, in 1112 [1700-01] his vizierate was withdrawn and he became Beylerbeyi of Kefe.

In Jumada al-Akhira 1115 [1703-04], following complaints from the people, he was removed from there and sent to Kars, and in Dhu'l-Qa'da he was sent as Beylerbeyi of Tripoli in Syria. In Ramadan 1116 [1704-05], again following complaints from the people, he was dismissed and retired, and he died in 1120 [1708-09]. He is buried at Tunusbağı in Üsküdar.

His sons were Ahmed and Hasan Bey. Ahmed Bey died in 1144 [1731-32] and Hasan Bey in 1156 [1743-44], and they were buried beside their father. Because his brother was executed in Muharram 1113 [1701-02], his own fortunes also declined.

The Family and the Decline

The entry introduces a pasha family from Amasya: İbrâhim Paşa, killed by the people at Temeşvar, and his sons Bıyıklı Mehmed Paşa and İsmâil Paşa, whose posts changed often. Hüsameddin ties İsmâil Paşa's rise to his brother, and his decline to his brother's execution in 1113 [1701-02]. His own administration, by contrast, ended twice in complaints from the people: at Kefe in 1115 and at Tripoli in 1116.

The similarity of names may cause confusion. The Bıyıklı Mehmed Paşa who died in 1521, beylerbeyi of Diyarbekir, took part in the eastern Anatolian conquests under Sultan Selim I; he is a different person and has no connection with the Bıyıklı Mehmed Paşa of this entry.

What the Search Could Not Find

The death of İbrâhim Paşa, warden of Temeşvar, in 1099, Bıyıklı Mehmed Paşa's marriage to Fatma Sultan and his execution in 1113, and the length of İsmâil Paşa's terms at Kefe and Tripoli could not be verified in the sources that could be read. The dates in the entry are therefore given as Hüsameddin gives them. No other source with information on İsmâil Paşa was found.
