The Enderun Mosque

The Enderun Mosque named in the text is the building in Amasya's Hatuniye quarter, in the inner part of the citadel, also known among the people as the Loğ Minare Mosque. The building is in ruins today. Its red-brick minaret, about thirteen meters across, resembles a heavy millstone (loğ), which gave it this name. The date of the mosque's construction is not known for certain; it is most likely thought to have been built in the time of Şemseddin İsmail Gazi Bey (1166-1172) of the Dânişmendids. Its architecture and brickwork show twelfth-century character. It collapsed into ruin in the earthquake of 1939, and from the remains it has been understood that it was built over a church. Hüsameddin himself wrote that some documents give the name "Câmi-i Enderun" or "Câmi-i Gazi Bey" from 612 (1215-16) onward.

Gülbahar Hatun and Her Amasya Waqf

The waqf from which İsmâil Efendi drew his stipend belongs to Gülbahar Hatun, wife of Mehmed the Conqueror and mother of Bayezid II. Very little is known of her life from the sources: it is reported that she entered the palace in 1446 and gave birth to Bayezid in Didymoteicho in 1448. When her son was sent to Amasya as sanjak governor in 1455 or 1456, at the age of seven, she went with him and lived in Amasya until his accession in 1481. Mehmed II gave her a village in Amasya as private property during the Trebizond campaign of 1461. She is known to have had waqfs in Tokat and Amasya. Her endowment in 879 (1474-75) of the revenue of certain villages and farmlands to the Enderun Mosque shows the source on which İsmâil Efendi's stipend rested. Later, in 911 (1505-06), Gülçiçek Hatun, also of the palace, endowed various revenue properties to the same mosque. After her son's accession Gülbahar Hatun came to Istanbul and lived about eleven years as valide sultan; her tomb is in the courtyard of the Fatih Mosque.

According to Hüsameddin, this prayer stipend was given first to İsmâil Efendi and then to his sons; after the sons' deaths (1138 and 1147) it passed to Hasan Efendizâde Mehmed Efendi. About two and a half centuries passed between the founding of the waqf (1474-75) and this record. The amount of the stipend and the manner of payment are not given in the entry.
