In Modern English

He is the son of Hacı Hasan Ağa, a notable of the Temennâ quarter of Amasya and trustee of the waqf of Hüsâmeddîn Temennâyî. When his father died in 1231 [1815-16], he became trustee of the Hüsâmeddîn Temennâyî waqf; then, during the governorship of Sivas of his uncle Hakkı İsmâil Pasha, he became ayan of Amasya, and afterward mütesellim of Amasya.

Later he was employed in certain state services and, as one of the kapıcıbaşıs of the Sublime Court, died in 1255 [1839-40]. His son is Mehmed Saîd Efendi. Osman Efendi, nephew of Saçlı Hacı Mahmud Efendi, married this son's daughter; their grandson is the mirliva Hakkı İsmâil Pasha.

The Mütesellim Office and the Kapıcıbaşı Rank

In the sources the office of mütesellim lasted from the late sixteenth century until the Tanzimat period; in the nineteenth century the principle was introduced that mütesellims be chosen especially from among high-ranking men such as the palace kapıcıbaşıs sent from Istanbul, though in some places governors continued to appoint local men as mütesellims. The sequence Hüsameddin describes, first trusteeship of the waqf, then ayanship, then mütesellim, then the rank of kapıcıbaşı, shows a member of a local family rising from office to rank. This does not contradict the source's statement that local men continued to be appointed mütesellim.

Two People with the Same Name

Hakkı İsmâil Pasha appears in two places in the text: first as the uncle who was governor of Sivas, then as the mirliva whom the author calls a grandson ("hafîd"). The structure of the sentence does not clearly show whose grandson the mirliva is. The two should not be confused. No information was found in other sources about the waqf of Hüsâmeddîn Temennâyî, the Temennâ quarter, the Geygellioğlu family, or Hakkı İsmâil Pasha.
