Scribal Work, the Court and Calligraphy
In Ottoman courts, the cases heard were recorded in register books by scribes working in the judge's office. Besides case records, these books also contain notarial transactions, waqf accounts, marriages, sales, surety, inheritance and orders arriving from the center; the oldest surviving registers date from Fâtih's time. That Kâtibzâde İsmâil Efendi was both scribe of the Shari'a court and a calligrapher is an example in Amasya of this written tradition. Hüsameddin's book presents calligraphy as one of Amasya's sources of pride. In the fourth volume (p. 606), when the calligraphers of this age are listed, names follow one another such as "Kâmil Mustafa, Kâtipzâde İsmâil, Ramazân Dedezâde Hüseyin, La'lî Ali, Abdülcelîl, Derviş Ali, Hatîb Fazlullah, Müderris Ahmed Efendi"; it is highly probable that "Kâtipzâde İsmâil" is the calligrapher of this entry. The same passage further praises Derviş Ali Efendi's ta'lik, Fazlullah Efendi's divanî and reyhanî, and Ramazânzâde Hüseyin Efendi's sülüs kırma, and writes that their works are in Amasya and Istanbul libraries and that the calligrapher Nefîszâde İbrâhim Pasha died in 1060. There was no opportunity to look for these works and see them.
The Fağfur Pasha Line and the Name Kâtibzâde
The Fağfur Pasha line to which İsmâil Efendi traces himself appears in other places in the book too. In the introduction to the first volume, in speaking of the branches of Amasya's notable houses, the branches "Cebecizâde" and "Fağfûr Paşazâde" are mentioned together with later renowned names such as "Sefer Ağazâde", "Hıfzîzâde" and "Ganizâde". The entry İshak Bey-Paşazâde in the seventh volume writes that Abdullah Çelebi, trustee of the Muzafferüddîn Fağfur Pasha waqf, was a grandson of İshak Bey. In the ninth volume "Sefer Ağa, of the line of Muzafferüddîn Fağfur Pasha, buried in Amasya" is mentioned. The entry Mevlânâ Kâtibî Hasan Efendi in the eighth volume tells of the judgeship at Amasya of a professor who wrote ta'lik, a son of Kâtibzâde Mehmed Efendi of the line of Fağfûr Pasha; this man, who became judge of Amasya in 1043, is a contemporary of İsmâil Efendi and bears the same name "Kâtibzâde". The kinship between the two is not written in the book. No record concerning Amasya was found in the outside sources read on Fağfur Pasha; only Hüsameddin's account can be relied on for the identity of the pasha and the waqf.
His Teachers
Turâbî Mustafa Efendi, from whom İsmâil Efendi took the literary and religious sciences, is mentioned in Hüsameddin's book when the well-known scholars of Amasya around 1017 are listed; before the passage on calligraphy, in the passage describing the same age, poets with the pen name "Türâbî" are also counted among the names that gave color to Amasya's literature. The name "Turâbî Mustafa Efendi" also appears in the index of an article on the poets of Amasya; since the text of the article could not be read, this poet's biography could not be verified. No information was found in the outside sources read on Ramazânzâde Hüseyin.
