In Modern English

He is from Köprü. He is the son of Hacı Hâfız Hasan Ağa of Köprü, head of the sultan's musketeers, who was the son of İsmâil Ağa. He studied the sciences in Istanbul, received the authority to give public lessons (ders-i âm), and in 1231 [1815-16] became a müderris by examination. He died in 1248 [1832-33] while müderris of the Sâniye-i Süleymaniye. He was one of the senior müderrises, a scholar and a man of maturity. He is buried in Üsküdar.

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • sertüfengi-i şehriyârî: head of the sultan's musketeers
  • mahdûm: son
  • ders-i âm: one who has received the authority to give public lessons (dersiâm)
  • bi'l-imtihân: by examination
  • Sâniye-i Süleymaniye: the second grade of the Süleymaniye madrasas (see below)
  • kibâr-ı müderrisîn: the senior müderrises
  • kâmil: mature, accomplished
  • medfûn: buried

Public Lessons and the Ranks of Teaching

Ders-i âm means a public lesson; those who held the title took one more examination after graduating from the madrasa and receiving the license (icazet). The text's "became ders-i âm and in 1231 a müderris by examination" fits this sequence. From the eighteenth century onward madrasas were divided into grades: two hâriç, two dâhil, two sahn, two altmışlı, three Süleymaniye and one dârülhadis. Since the Süleymaniye grade had three steps, the phrase "Sâniye-i Süleymaniye" appears to indicate the second of them; because the sources do not give the names of these three steps, this is an inference.

Family Tie

A footnote to entry 219 of the book mentions this İsmâil Efendi's grandfather Rahtuvân İsmâil Ağa and his father Hasan Ağa: the father of Köprülüzâde İsmâil Pasha, Hâfız Ömer Ağa, was the brother of Hâfız Hasan Ağa. On this account İsmâil Efendi and Köprülüzâde İsmâil Pasha were first cousins. This link rests only on Hüsameddin's footnote; no information was found in other sources about Köprülü Hâfız Hasan Ağa or his son the müderris.
