In Modern English

He is from Amasya. He is the younger son of Bektaşoğlu Hacı Mehmed Ağa, one of the janissary notables. He was trained in the household of the Amasya-born vizier Seyyid Mustafa Pasha of the Ocak İmamzade family and became his çuhadar. When this pasha retired he served Zühdü İsmâil Pasha. On the latter's death he attached himself to his fellow townsman Çelebi Mustafa Pasha and gained knowledge and experience as his mühürdar during his grand vizierate.

He then travelled through the country as kapıcıbaşı with his master. While living in Üsküdar he died on the second day of Receb 1238 [1823]. He is buried in Üsküdar.

His Masters

For the three pashas in the text, the vizier Seyyid Mustafa Pasha of the Ocak İmamzade family, Zühdü İsmâil Pasha and Çelebi Mustafa Pasha, our searches found no descriptive information. In another entry of the book (vol. 6, no. 703) Çelebi Mustafa Pasha is mentioned as a "former grand vizier"; there his father is given as Hacı Ahmed Ağa of Amasya, who died in 1204 [1789-90] while steward of the Yaş gate. Since no reliable source was found on the date of this pasha's grand vizierate, no date is given.

The Kapıcıbaşı Post

The kapıcıbaşı was the official who kept watch each night among the privileged gatekeepers of the Bâbüsselâm gate of the palace and supervised them. In the provinces, it is noted, certain duties such as market inspection (ihtisap) and muhzırbaşılık were also given to gatekeepers. Which kind of kapıcıbaşılık is meant in the text, whether palace-based or merely a title, is not clear. No information was found in other sources on İsmâil Ağa the mühürdar.
