Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Amasya havâlîsinde meskûn olan Türkmen beylerinden "Atallu" demekle meşhûr Ömer Bey'in mahdûmu olup 722 rebî'ulâhirinde Amasya vâlîsi olmuşdur. Vesâ'ik-i atîkada "el-emîrü'l-kebîr el-atabegü'l-hatîr Nâsıru'd-devle ve'd-dîn Ahmed bin Ömer el-Atâlî" ve amcası "Şerefeddîn Hüseyin bin Ahmed el-Atâlî" göründüğüne nazaran "Atallu" oymağından olduğu anlaşılır. Sultân Mes'ûd ile oğlu Sultân Altunbaş'ın atabegleri olduğu cihetle "Atabeg" demekle meşhûrdur.⁴³⁷ [479]

Bu esnâda Amasya a'yân-ı ümerâsından İnâc oğlu Seyfeddîn Banukşâh bin Tuğrul Bey, Durak oğlu Şihâbeddîn Şâdî Bey bin İzzeddîn Balabân ve ulemâdan Şemseddîn Muhammed en-Nahcivânî ve kibâr-ı müderrisînden Şerefeddîn Ya'kûb bin ez-Ziyârî pek meşhûr olup Fahreddîn Ebû Tâlib Muhammed bin Şerefeddîn Alî bin es-Seyyid Tâceddîn Muhammed el-Isfahânî Tokat emîri, kibâr-ı ümerâdan Şerefeddîn Osmâncık Bey bin Mahmûd es-Sorkûnî⁴³⁸ Osmâncık emîri ve emîr-i meşhûr Sirâceddîn Toganşâh bin Savcı Bey Niksâr emîri oldu.

Kedağra emîri Tutaş oğlu Bedreddîn Mahmûd Çelebi a'yân arasında "Emîr Çelebi" demekle meşhûr olup Acaytu Hân bin Cumûdâr Hân Varay kazâsında ikâmet etmekde idi. Hânkâh-ı Mes'ûdî meşîhatı Elvân Çelebi elinde ve Mevlevî-hâne meşîhatı da meşâhîr-i ulemâ-yı Mevleviyye'den Hüsâmeddîn Hasan Çelebi uhdesinde idi.

Amasya vâlîsi Nâsıreddîn Ahmed Bey, birkaç seneden beri binâsına devâm etdiği medresesini 725'de ikmâl edib müderrisliğini meşâhîr-i ulemâdan Cemâleddîn İbrâhim el-Aksarâyî uhdesine tevcîh ve 726 evâ'ilinde Sultân Muzaffereddîn Osmân Hân hazretleri Bursa'da irtihâl-i dâr-ı na'îm ve şehzâdeleri Sultân Şücâ'eddîn Orhân taht-ı âlî-i Osmâniye'ye cülûs etmişdir. Ba'zı tevârîhde müşârün-ileyhe "Osmâncık Bey" denmesi, [480] bu târîhde Sorkun beldesi ya'nî şimdiki Osmâncık kasabası emîri bulunan Şerefeddîn Osmâncık Bey'den galat olmalıdır.

Lâkin Sultân Ebû Sa'îd Hân'ın emîrü'l-ümerâsı Çoban Noyin, son derece nüfûz ve istiklâle mâlik olduğu cihetle rukabâ-yı ikbâli pek ziyâde hased ediyorlardı. 726'da diğer oğlu Hâce Dımışk'ı vezîr nasb etmekle sultânı bile şübheye düşürmüş idi. Sene-i mezbûrede Çoban Noyin, Horasân'a gitdikde Sultân Ebû Sa'îd Bahâdır Hân, bütün ümerâyı kendi tarafına celb edib Emîr Çoban'ı ve bütün etbâ'ını 727 evâ'ilinde azl eylediği esnâda eyâlet-i Rûmiyye vâlîsi olan oğlu Emîr Timurtaş'ı da azl ederek dayısı Emîr Alî Pâdişâhı nasb etmişdir.

Sivas vâlîsi Emîr Timurtaş Bey'in nezdinde mukîm olan kayınbirâderi Aretna Noyin zamân-ı sabâvetinden beri sarây-ı İlhânî'de hâdim-i sultânî olduğu cihetle Ebû Sa'îd Bahâdır Hân'ın ve Emîr Çoban'ın i'timâdını kazanıp Sivas'da nâzır-ı eyâlet şeklinde bulunmakda ve Emîr Timurtaş'ın muhâlifi olan ümerâ tarafından da emîr-i mûmâ-ileyhin tekrâr isyân edeceği Bahâdır Hân'a ismâ' olunmakda idi.

Binâ'en-aleyh Sultân Ebû Sa'îd Bahâdır Hân, Emîr Çoban'ın azlinden sonra Emîr Timurtaş'ın isyân edeceğini tahmîn edib mûmâ-ileyhin istîsâli hakkında Anadolu ümerâsına emir veriyor, hükûmet-i Mısriyye'den dahi ahz ve irsâlini iltimâs ediyor, Anadolu vâlî-i umûmîliğine nasb olunan [481] Emîr Alî Pâdişâh tarafından Irlayıc (Iranc) Noyin Anadolu'da vekîl-i emâret olarak i'zâm ediliyordu.

Sivas vâlîsi Emîr Timurtaş Bey'in azl ve istîsâli haberi Anadolu eyâletinde şâyi' oldukda ona müntesib olan ümerâ telâşa düşüyordu. Bunlardan Amasya vâlîsi Nâsıreddîn Ahmed Bey derhâl bütün emlâkini binâ eylediği medreseye bir an evvel vakf ve tahsîs ederek 727 saferinin evâ'ilinde vakfiyesini tanzîm etmekle her türlü muhâtarâta karşı hâzırlanıyordu.

Ebû Sa'îd Bahâdır Hân'ın bu emrini bir ni'met add eden Karamânzâde Şücâ'eddîn Yahşî Bey hükûmet-i Mısriyye'nin muzâherâtı üzerine derhâl kuvve-i mevcûdesini alıp ibtidâ Kayseriyye'yi işgâl ederek oranın emîri Tâcî Kızıl oğlu Musliheddîn Mûsâ Bey'i def' etdikden sonra Emîr Timurtaş'ın tahassun etdiği Dârende'yi muhâsara ve Tatar askeriyle Ankara Bey'i Devletşâh Bey dahi mu'âvenet ediyordu.

Iranc Noyin de Erzurum üzerinden Sivas'a gelip Emîr Timurtaş'ın vekîl-i emâret bırakdığı Aretna Noyin ile birleşerek Emîr Timurtaş'ı ahz ve katl etmek istiyor, fakat Aretna Noyin bu fikre kalben muvâfakat etmediği cihetle Sivas'ı boş bırakamayacağını beyân ederek Iranc'ı def' ediyor, bu cihetden bunların da araları açılıyordu.

Nihâyet Iranc Noyin, Emîr Alî Pâdişâh nâmına Sivas şehrini tesellüm için istîlâya kıyâm etmekle Aretna Noyin Iranc'ı tanımıyor, Sivas etrâfında harb ederek şehre yanaşdırmıyor, Sultân Ebû Sa'îd Bahâdır Hân [482] nâmına Sivas'ı zabt ediyor, diğer tarafdan Karamânzâde Yahşî Bey Dârende'yi son derece tazyîk etmekle Emîr Timurtaş Mısır'a firâr etdikden sonra Yahşî Bey dahi Dârende'ye cebren giriyordu.

Müverrihîn-i Osmâniye'den Ramazânzâde Mehmed ve Emîr Hasanzâde Mustafa Cenâbî Çelebiler gibi pek çokları Karaman Bey'in babası, Baba İlyâs Horasânî mürîd-i hâsı Amasyalı Nûre Sûfî olduğunu müttefikan beyân ediyorlar.

Evlâd-ı Karaman'ın cedd-i a'lâsı Nûre Sûfî olup "Karaman, Oğuz Hân, Tekir Hân" nâmında üç oğlu var idi. Bunlar Evlâd-ı Oğuz Hân olup Alâ'iyye bilâdına hâkim olmuşlardır. Bunların aslı bilâd-ı Ermenâk'dan "Kamış" denilen yerdendir. Karaman, Ermenâk dâhilinde Bekkusun adlı bir yerde medfûndur".

Şu rivâyât-ı muhtelifeden müstebân olduğu üzere Karaman Bey'in babası, Nûreddîn'in muhaffefi olan Nûre Sûfî olduğu ve Türkmenler'den Oğuzlu yâhud Oğuz Hânlu kabîlesinden bulunduğu muhakkakdır. Ancak Nûre'nin Amasyalı yâhud Ermenâklı olmasında ve Oğuz Hânlu kabîlesinin Kayı neslinden yâhud Kınık soyundan bulunduğunda ihtilâf-ı sûrî vardır.

Lâkin şu ihtilâfın aslı tedkîk olunursa Nûre Sûfî'nin vatan-ı aslîsi çabuk ta'ayyün eder. Çünkü Ermenâk beldesi, Sultân [485] Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd devrinde 625 senesinde feth edildiği ve Karaman Bey'in takrîben elli yaşlarında 660 târîhlerinde vefât eylediği Târîh-i İbni Bîbî, el-Aylemü'z-Zâhir, Câmiu'd-Düvel, Ikdü'l-Cümân gibi tevârîh-i mühimmede mezkûr olduğuna binâ'en Karaman Bey'in pederi ve kendisi Ermenâk fethinden mukaddem mevcûd oldukları âşikârdır.

İşte Kayı neslinden temeyyüz etmiş bir oymak olan Osmânlılar ile Karamânîler arasındaki rekâbet-i siyâsiyyenin menşe'i, karâbet-i ırkiyye olduğunda şübhe yokdur.

In Modern English

He was the son of Ömer Bey, known as "Atallu", one of the Turkmen beys living around Amasya; in Rabî' al-âkhir 722 [1322] he became governor of Amasya. Since he appears in old documents as "the great emir, the worthy atabeg, helper of state and religion Ahmed bin Ömer el-Atâlî" and his uncle as "Şerefeddin Hüseyin bin Ahmed el-Atâlî", it is understood that he was of the "Atallu" clan. Because he was atabeg of Sultan Mesud and of his son Sultan Altunbaş, he is known as "Atabeg".

At this time, among the notable emirs of Amasya, Seyfeddin Banukşah bin Tuğrul Bey, son of İnaç, and Şihâbeddin Şadi Bey bin İzzeddin Balaban, son of Durak, among the scholars Şemseddin Muhammed en-Nahcivânî, and among the great professors Şerefeddin Yakub bin ez-Ziyârî were very famous. Fahreddin Ebu Talib Muhammed bin Şerefeddin Ali bin es-Seyyid Tâceddin Muhammed el-Isfahânî became emir of Tokat; among the great emirs Şerefeddin Osmancık Bey bin Mahmud es-Sorkûnî became emir of Osmancık; and the famed emir Sirâceddin Toganşah bin Savcı Bey became emir of Niksar.

Bedreddin Mahmud Çelebi, son of Tutaş and emir of Kedağra, was known among the notables as "Emir Çelebi"; Acaytu Khan bin Cumudar Khan lived in the district of Varay. The sheikhdom of the Hankâh-ı Mesûdî was in the hands of Elvan Çelebi, and the sheikhdom of the Mevlevî lodge was in the charge of Hüsameddin Hasan Çelebi, one of the famed Mevlevî scholars.

Nâsıreddin Ahmed Bey, governor of Amasya, completed in 725 [1325] the madrasa whose construction he had carried on for several years and gave its professorship to Cemâleddin İbrahim el-Aksarâyî, one of the famed scholars. In early 726 [1326] His Majesty Sultan Muzafferüddin Osman Khan passed to the hereafter in Bursa, and one of his princes, Sultan Şücâeddin Orhan, took the exalted Ottoman throne. That in some histories the said sultan is called "Osmancık Bey" must come from confusion with Şerefeddin Osmancık Bey, who at this date was emir of the town of Sorkun, that is, the present town of Osmancık.

But since Çoban Noyin, emir of the emirs of Sultan Abu Sa'id Khan, possessed extreme influence and independence, those who were rivals to his fortune envied him greatly. In 726 [1326] by appointing his other son Hâce Dımışk as vizier he had even aroused the sultan's suspicion. When in the same year Çoban Noyin went to Khorasan, Sultan Abu Sa'id Bahadur Khan drew all the emirs to his side and in early 727 [1326-27] removed Emir Çoban and all his supporters from office. At this time he also removed from office his son Emir Timurtaş, governor of the province of Rûm, and appointed in his place his maternal uncle Emir Ali Padişah.

Aretna Noyin, brother-in-law of Emir Timurtaş Bey, governor of Sivas, who lived with him, had won the trust of Abu Sa'id Bahadur Khan and of Emir Çoban because he had been a servant of the sultan in the Ilkhanid palace since childhood, and stood in Sivas as if he were the provincial overseer. Bahadur Khan was also told by the emirs who were opponents of Emir Timurtaş that the said emir would rebel again.

Thereupon Sultan Abu Sa'id Bahadur Khan, after Emir Çoban's removal, anticipated that Emir Timurtaş would rebel. He gave orders to the Anatolian emirs for his capture and also asked the Egyptian government to seize and send him. Irlayıç (Iranc) Noyin was sent to Anatolia as deputy of the emirate by Emir Ali Padişah, who had been appointed governor-general of Anatolia.

When the news that Emir Timurtaş Bey, governor of Sivas, had been removed and was wanted for capture spread in the province of Anatolia, the emirs attached to him fell into alarm. Among them Nâsıreddin Ahmed Bey, governor of Amasya, endowed and set aside all his property to the madrasa he had built as quickly as possible, drew up his waqf deed in early Safar 727 [1326-27], and prepared against every kind of danger.

Karamanzâde Şücâeddin Yahşi Bey, who regarded this order of Abu Sa'id Bahadur Khan as a blessing, with the support of the Egyptian government immediately took his available force and first occupied Kayseri; after removing its emir Musliheddin Musa Bey, son of Tâcî Kızıl, he besieged Dârende, where Emir Timurtaş had taken refuge. Devletşah Bey, the bey of Ankara, with Tatar soldiers, was also helping him.

Iranc Noyin too came to Sivas by way of Erzurum and, joining Aretna Noyin, whom Emir Timurtaş had left as deputy of the emirate, wished to capture and kill Emir Timurtaş. But since Aretna Noyin did not wholeheartedly agree to this idea, he said that he could not leave Sivas empty and sent Iranc away, and for this reason relations between them were also broken.

In the end, when Iranc Noyin moved to take over the city of Sivas in the name of Emir Ali Padişah, Aretna Noyin did not recognize Iranc; he fought around Sivas and did not let him approach the city, and took Sivas in the name of Sultan Abu Sa'id Bahadur Khan. Meanwhile, when Karamanzâde Yahşi Bey pressed Dârende very hard, Emir Timurtaş fled to Egypt; Yahşi Bey then entered Dârende by force.

But since Gümüşlüzâde Mahmud Bey, adviser of Emir Timurtaş, and his companions had fled to Amasya and taken refuge there, Karamanzâde Yahşi Bey marched on Amasya; when Fahreddin Muhammed Bey, emir of Tokat, submitted, he besieged Amasya. Iranc Noyin, who had given up hope of Sivas, returned to Amasya too, but when the Tatar soldiers with him plundered the places they passed through, everyone rose against Iranc.

In short, after Karamanzâde Yahşi Bey and his brother-in-law Devletşah Bey besieged Amasya for a time, when Nâsıreddin Ahmed Bey, the governor defending Amasya, died wounded in mid-727 [1327], the people asked for quarter and they entered Amasya from the west side. The mountain on which the Karamanids pitched their tents and sat, and from which they entered Amasya, has been called Karaman Mountain until now.

After Karamanzâde Yahşi Bey entered Amasya, he sent to Egypt Gümüşlüzâde Tâceddin Mahmud, adviser of Emir Timurtaş; his steward Buşaklu Musliheddin Kutlu; among the Turkmen emirs Kedağralı Becas and Emir Çelebizâde Taşan; Mahmud Bey's slaves, the beys Pars and Laçin; Babazâde Alâeddin Ali Âşık Pasha, the other adviser of Emir Timurtaş; and his cousin Cemâleddin Fîrûz Bey. He seized the province of Amasya and gave it, in his own name, to Seyfeddin Banukşah Bey, son of İnaç.

Şücâeddin Yahşi Bey, who seized Amasya, was the son of Karaman Beyzâde Bedreddin Mahmud bin Şemseddin Muhammed bin Karaman bin Nûreddin bin Sa'deddin bin İbrahim Khan, whose genealogy is given above. It is certain that his ancestors and grandfathers were among the Turkmen emirs and rulers. But historians' words differ on where this Karaman Bey came from and to which lineage among the twenty-four tribes of the Turkmens he belonged; some of this has been mentioned above as it came up.

Many Ottoman historians, such as Ramazanzâde Mehmed and Emir Hasanzâde Mustafa Cenâbî Çelebi, report in agreement that Karaman Bey's father was Nûre Sûfî of Amasya, the particular disciple of Baba İlyas Horasânî. Ibn Bibi also writes that, at the beginning of the conquest, Karaman was the son of Nûre Sûfî, one of the Turkmens settled in Ermenek, and says that Karaman had a brother named Şemseddin Üngüz. Older historians such as Şikârî and Neşrî likewise record that Karaman Bey was the son of Nûreddin bin Sa'deddin bin İbrahim Khan, of the Oğuzlu tribe of the Turkmens.

In Ikdu'l-Cümân Bedreddin Mahmud el-Aynî says: "The greatest of the Turkmen tribes is the Kınık. The sultans, meliks, the sons of Seljuk and the Turkmens who came with Sultan Alp Arslan the Seljuk and settled in the cities are of this tribe. The Yahmur Oğulları, Varsak, Haydu Oğulları, Süleyman Paşa Oğulları and Karaman Oğulları are of these Turkmens. The greatest ancestor of the Karamanoğulları was Nûre Sûfî, who had three sons named 'Karaman, Oğuz Han, Tekir Han'. These were descendants of Oğuz Han and came to rule the regions of Alâiye. Their origin is from the place called 'Kamış' in the Ermenek region. Karaman is buried in a place called Bekkusun within Ermenek."

As is understood from these various reports, it is certain that Karaman Bey's father was Nûre Sûfî, a shortened form of Nûreddin, and that he was of the Oğuzlu or Oğuz Hanlu tribe of the Turkmens. But there is an apparent difference as to whether Nûre was from Amasya or from Ermenek, and whether the Oğuz Hanlu tribe was of the Kayı line or of the Kınık line.

But if the root of this difference is examined, Nûre Sûfî's true homeland is quickly clear. For it is recorded in important histories such as the History of Ibn Bibi, el-Aylemü'z-Zâhir, Câmiu'd-Düvel and Ikdü'l-Cümân that the town of Ermenek was conquered in 625 [1228] in the time of Sultan Alâeddin Keykubad, and that Karaman Bey died around 660 [1261-62] at about fifty years of age. Accordingly, Karaman Bey's father and he himself existed before the conquest of Ermenek; the town of Ermenek cannot have been Karaman Bey's true homeland.

It is documented that the father of Nûreddin Tugrak Bey, former governor of Amasya, who died in 632 [1234-35] and is understood to have been buried in his tomb, still extant today, adjoining the mosque he had built in Amasya, was, according to the records, Sa'deddin Suli Bey bin İbrahim. Tugrak Bey is known to have had three sons named Seyfeddin Salar, Şemseddin Ugur and Hüsameddin Timur, and a son-in-law named Şerefeddin İnaç Bey.

It is noteworthy that Karamanzâde Yahşi Bey, taking advantage of a small opportunity, at once seized Amasya and gave its emirate to Banukşah, grandson of İnaç Bey, the son-in-law of Tugrak Bey. After Banukşah, Şihâbeddin Şadi Bey, grandson of Tugrak Bey through Salar Bey, becomes emir of Amasya. Then the Second Banukşah, grandson of Banukşah, living in Aksaray, becomes son-in-law to Alâeddin Ali Bey, son of this Yahşi Bey; two sons of his daughter, named Ali and Süleyman Beys, are recorded.

Since all these documents and historical records cannot be attributed to strange coincidences, the report of Ramazanzâde Mehmed and Emir Hasanzâde Mustafa Cenâbî Çelebi is in part consistent with the records. For this reason the supposition grows stronger that Karaman Bey's father was the former governor of Amasya Nûreddin Tugrak Bey bin Sa'deddin Süli Bey bin İbrahim and that he was originally from Amasya.

That Karaman Bey later settled in the place called "Kamış" within the town of Ermenek and is buried at the place called "Bekkusun" is not contrary to this basis.

The Oğuz Hanlu tribe is also known as Oğuzlu; although, according to the manner of record of Ikdü'l-Cumân, it is understood to have split from the "Kanık, Kınık" line, it is well known to be a clan branched from the Kayı line. There is no doubt that the source of the political rivalry between the Ottomans, a clan separated from the Kayı line, and the Karamanids is kinship.

The Karamanids claim to be superior to the Seljuks and the Ottomans in race and worthy of government. In return, the Ottomans, to refute the Karamanids and discredit them in the eyes of the people, spread that Karaman Bey's father Nûreddin Tugrak Bey was a woodcutter and a common man named Nûre Sûfî, or an Armenian and a later convert to Islam. The Seljuk historian Ibn Bibi wrote the former report, and many of the Ottoman historians the second rumor. That both of these rumors consist of political influences and are contrary to the truth becomes apparent with a little thought.

Atabey Ahmed, Governor of Amasya, and His Lineage

Nâsıreddin Ahmed Atabey was atabeg of the Seljuk sultan Gıyaseddin Mesud II and of his son Gazi Çelebi Taceddin Altunbaş. His descendants are called Atabeyzâdeler in Amasya; Hüsameddin also mentions this in the footnote to this entry. A study states that Ahmed Atabey served as governor of Amasya for five years between 1322 and 1327, had the Atabey Madrasa built and endowed all his lands and property to this madrasa. This agrees with the dates Hüsameddin gives, Rabî' al-âkhir 722 [1322] and Safar 727 [1326-27]. The same study relates that his sons gained a respected place among the people of Amasya, acted with good sense on the acceptance of Ottoman rule, and so the family held important posts in the Ottoman period too. The most famous branch of the family is Yörgüç Pasha and his descendants, the second branch his brother Hızır Pasha and his children. In the fifteenth century the post of tutor (lala) to princes became a duty peculiar to the Atabeyzâdeler. Şücâeddin İlyas, Muînüddin Abdullah and Celâleddin Yörgüç Pasha, whom Hüsameddin mentions in the footnote, are notables of this line.

The Fall of Timurtaş and Eretna

The person Hüsameddin calls Aretna is known as Eretna. One study writes that Eretna was of Uighur origin and Timurtaş's brother-in-law, and that Timurtaş left him the governor-generalship of Anatolia when, after the disturbances around Eğridir and in Sivas, he took refuge in Egypt in October 1327. That the year Timurtaş fled to Egypt is 727 [1327] agrees with the sequence of events Hüsameddin relates. It is also known that Sultan Abu Sa'id removed Emir Çoban and that Çoban was killed in 1327. The studies say that Eretna later founded a principality centered on Sivas and Kayseri, and another study writes that between 1335 and 1381 this principality ruled, together with Sivas and Kayseri, such places as Amasya, Zile and Canik. The details of Hüsameddin's account of the dispute between "Iranc" and Aretna were not found in other sources.

The Origin of the Karamanids

In this entry Hüsameddin opens a long parenthesis and discusses where Karaman Bey came from. In the encyclopedic study on the Karamanoğulları the lineage is described as follows. Karaman Bey's grandfather was Sadeddin, one of the Oghuz beys, and his father was Nûreddin, called Nûre Sûfî. Nûreddin attached himself to Baba İlyas, became his disciple, and withdrew into seclusion leaving the leadership of the community to his son Karaman. His tomb is reported to be on the Değirmenlik plateau in the Sinanlı district of Mut. According to the Karamanid historian Şikârî, the Karamanids' ancestors probably lived in Azerbaijan and Arrân, came to the Sivas region on the Mongol invasion, and after joining the Baba İshak revolt settled in the Ermenek and Mut region. According to Yazıcıoğlu Ali, this dynasty belongs to the Afshar tribe of the Oghuz. Karaman Bey laid the foundation of the principality in 1256 and died around 1263. His grave is in the village of Balgasun (present name Bağbölen), 18 kilometers from Ermenek. It seems probable that the place Hüsameddin calls "Bekkusun" is this same Balgasun; but this identity is not explicitly established in the sources.

In this account there is no information at all that Nûre Sûfî was from Amasya or that Karaman Bey's father was Nûreddin Tugrak Bey, buried in Amasya. This view of Hüsameddin is his own inference and could not be verified in the sources examined. He himself presents it as a "supposition", not a firm judgment.

Moreover, Hüsameddin's showing Yahşi Bey as the son of Bedreddin Mahmud does not agree with the account in the encyclopedic study. There it is written that Mecdüddin Mahmud Bey, brother who passed to the principality after Güneri Bey, died in 1307-08, that his son Yahşi Bey succeeded him and that he took Konya in 1314; after Yahşi Bey the principality passed to his brother Bedreddin İbrahim. That is, the person Hüsameddin calls "Bedreddin Mahmud" may be the same as "Mecdüddin Mahmud" in the encyclopedic study; the names are given differently. Yahşi Bey's death date is estimated in the encyclopedia as 1341-1342.

The Death of Osman Gazi

Hüsameddin places the death of Osman Gazi in 726 [1326]. Osman's death date has been determined in an encyclopedic study, on the basis of waqf deeds, as 724 [1324]. His explanation of the expression "Osmancık Bey" rests on the information that Sorkun (Osmancık) was at this time under the emirate of Şerefeddin Osmancık Bey and that the Beyler Mosque belonged to him; for this Hüsameddin cites a waqf deed dated 731. This waqf deed was not found in other sources.

The Seizure of Amasya

The Karamanid Yahşi Bey's seizure of Amasya in 727 and his exiling to Egypt of persons such as Gümüşlüzâde Mahmud Çelebi and Âşık Pasha were not found in the sources examined. That a mountain in Amasya still bears the name "Karaman Mountain", as Hüsameddin writes, could not be verified in other sources either.
