Hüsameddin's Note on the Mufti's Identity
Hüsameddin notes that he saw the name of the new mufti, İmaret Şeyhi Mehmed Efendi, in this form in the Defter-i Müftiyân (register of mufti appointments) of the abolished Meşihat office, but that, judging by his being sheikh of the İmaret, he must be the son of the former mufti Abdurrahman Efendi. Since earlier sections of the book relate that the sheikhdom of the İmaret was given to Abdurrahman Efendi's brothers, it is understood that this sheikhdom stayed in the family. This is an inference; Hüsameddin too presents it not as certain information but as a guess filling a gap in the document.
Sadık Mehmed Ağa and the Yüzbaşıoğulları
Sabit Genç, relying on Hüsameddin, records that Sadık Mehmed Ağa took over the head of Amasya in July 1798; this corresponds to the beginning of Muharrem 1213. In the 10th volume of his book Hüsameddin describes another person of the Yüzbaşıoğlu family, Seyyid Reşid Mustafa Ağa. According to him Reşid Mustafa Ağa is the son of "Hafız el-Hac Mehmed Emin Ağa son of el-Hac Ali Ağa, of the eşraf of Amasya". He came to Istanbul and entered the service of Moralızade Osman Penah Efendi; after his death he served as steward to some viziers, was seen as kapıcıbaşı in 1242 [1826–27], and died around 1246 [1830–31]. If this Mehmed Emin Ağa is the same person as the former janissary ağa Yüzbaşıoğlu Mehmed Emin Ağa, Reşid Mustafa Ağa would be Sadık Mehmed Ağa's brother. Hüsameddin does not state this link explicitly; that one branch of the family rose in Amasya and one in Istanbul can only be said as a possibility.
Tayyar Mahmud Bey, "Newly Come from Russia"
Hüsameddin's phrase "newly come from Russia" for Tayyar Mahmud Bey points to a long captivity in the Canikli family's history. According to Özcan Mert's entry on the family of Canikli Hacı Ali Pasha, Tayyar's father Battal Hüseyin Pasha, defeated by the Russians at Anapa in October 1790, was taken prisoner and lived about nine years in captivity with his son Tayyar Mahmud Bey; the place where he stayed was later called Battalpashinsk. The Pasha, pardoned at the request of Russian Tsar Paul I at the end of March 1799, was brought to the governorship of Trabzon with the rank of vizier, and the sanjaks of Canik and Amasya were given to his son. That Hüsameddin shows Tayyar as muhassıl of Canik in Muharrem 1213 [June–July 1798] falls a few months before this official pardon; the family may also have returned to Anatolia before the official pardon, but the sources we have do not shed light on this point. The line "Tayyar düşüp Moskova esir olmuş idim ben" (I, Tayyar, had fallen and been taken captive in Moscow) in a quatrain in Tayyar Pasha's own divan shows how this captivity lodged in the poet's memory.
Gürcüzade Osman Pasha
According to the biographical record based on Mehmed Süreyya's Sicill-i Osmânî, Gürcü Osman Pasha was first a kapıcıbaşı, became a vizier in 1789–90, guardian of Vidin in 1795–96, and then governor of Silistre. In July–August 1798 he became beylerbeyi of Anatolia, in February 1799 governor of Bosnia, in April 1799 governor of Salonica, then beylerbeyi of Rumelia, in 1801 governor of Diyarbekir, and in 1802 again governor of Bosnia. Hüsameddin places his governorship of Anatolia in Cemaziyelahir 1213 [November–December 1798]; the date in the Sicill-i Osmânî is a few months earlier. The pasha's tragic end in Erzurum in 1803 is told in entry 79.
On the exegete Hacı Abdünnebi, mentioned among those who died this year, and on Kutoğlu Hüseyin Pasha, no information was found in other sources.
