Caniklidir. Hacı Alî Paşa'nın büyük kardeşi hazînedâr Süleymân Paşazâde Mehmed Bey'in oğludur. "Hazînedârzâde" demekle meşhûrdur. 1209 muharrem ibtidâsında Amasya muhassılı olup a'yândan Kayalıpaşazâde Hacı Süleymân Bey Amasya mütesellimi oldu.
Saferde Hacı Alî Efendi'nin azliyle Zeyneloğlu Hacı Ömer Efendi şehir kethüdâsı oldu ve Çapanzâde Süleymân Bey'e rağmen nizâm-ı cedîd aleyhdârı olanlar ikbâl ve i'tibâr gördü.
Rebî'ulevvel ibtidâsında müftü Hacı Hüseyin [169] Efendi'nin azliyle selefi Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi Amasya müftüsü ve Emîr Hacıoğlu Hacı Hüseyin Efendi nakîb kâ'im-makâmı, Selâmzâde Mustafâ Ağa Amasya serdârı oldu.
Hazînedârzâde Süleymân Bey'in hâmîsi silahdâr-ı şehriyârî Lâdikli Abdullâh Ağa idi.
Fakat Amasya mütesellimi Kayalıpaşazâde Hacı Süleymân Bey, nizâm-ı cedîd efrâdının bakiyyesini sevk ederek bir cesâret-i medeniyye gösterdi.
In Modern English
He was from Canik. He was the son of the hazinedar (treasurer) Mehmed Bey, son of Süleyman Pasha, the elder brother of Hacı Ali Pasha. He is known as "Hazinedarzade". At the beginning of Muharrem 1209 [1794] he became muhassıl of Amasya; Kayalıpaşazade Hacı Süleyman Bey, one of the ayan, became mütesellim of Amasya.
In Safer Hacı Ali Efendi was dismissed and Zeyneloğlu Hacı Ömer Efendi became city kethüda. In spite of Çapanzade Süleyman Bey, those opposed to the Nizâm-ı Cedîd received esteem and favor.
At the beginning of Rebiülevvel the mufti Hacı Hüseyin Efendi was dismissed; the mufti before him, Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi, became mufti of Amasya, Emir Hacıoğlu Hacı Hüseyin Efendi nakib kaymakamı, and Selamzade Mustafa Ağa serdar of Amasya.
The patron of Hazinedarzade Süleyman Bey was the sultan's silahdar Lâdikli Abdullah Ağa. In the shadow and under the protection of this man, Süleyman Bey had become governor and muhassıl of two important sanjaks such as Canik and Amasya. But he did not appreciate its value and brought trouble upon his master.
This Süleyman Bey, though appearing to be a supporter of the Nizâm-ı Cedîd, was at the head of those who objected to it. While some of the nizamiye soldiers requested from Amasya the previous year had gone, he created various difficulties in sending the rest and employed the objectors in posts.
But Kayalıpaşazade Hacı Süleyman Bey, mütesellim of Amasya, showed an example of civil courage by sending the remainder of the Nizâm-ı Cedîd soldiers and stood against the objectors. In return he was rewarded with the rank of kapıcıbaşı.
In the first days of Şevval, Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi was dismissed and the mufti before him, Hacı Hüseyin Efendi, again became mufti of Amasya. On the sixth day of the month Şeyh Hasan Sinan Efendi, one of the great Halveti sheikhs and scholars, sheikh of the Çevikçe Tekke and father of Abdullah Vecih Efendi, died. Amasya experienced a great day of mourning. His second son Mehmed Şerif Efendi took his place.
At the beginning of Muharrem 1210 [1795], by Hazinedaroğlu Süleyman Bey, Köse Mehmedoğlu Hacı Ömer Ağa became mütesellim of Amasya, and Kayalıpaşazade Hacı Ömer Bey chief ayan and muhtar-ı belde (the city's elected representative).
In Rebiülevvel the kadı went to Istanbul; the clerk Hacı Rıfkı Osman Efendi became naib of Amasya. At the beginning of Cemaziyelevvel Halil Efendi became kadı of Amasya, and by him İsmail Efendi came as naib.
In Cemaziyelahir the sultan's silahdar Lâdikli Abdullah Ağa, patron of Hazinedaroğlu, fell out of favor while awaiting the vizierate; he was dismissed and retired. The reason for this is thought to have been Hazinedaroğlu's headstrong conduct and his opposition to the Nizâm-ı Cedîd.
At the beginning of Receb, Dizdarzade Hacı Hüseyin Efendi withdrew from the fatwa office at the insistence of the ulema; the mufti before him, Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi, again became mufti of Amasya. This year, among the ulema the famous physician Hacı Süleyman of Medina and the preacher Mühtedî Mehmed Efendi; among the ayan Hacı Ahmed Ârif Ağa, çuhadar of İbrahim Hıfzı Pasha of Amasya, and, among the janissary officers, Topçuoğlu Hacı Abdurrahman Ağa died.
Since Hacı Abdurrahman Ağa had no son, he had bequeathed that one third of his property be spent on the repair of the Hacı Ömer Bey Mescid in Aşağıpazar, and had appointed his brother's son Mehmed Ağa son of Mustafa Ağa as executor. Mehmed Ağa, with two thousand kuruş, one third of his uncle's property, had the mescid pulled down and rebuilt as a mosque (cami). Adding a shop adjoining it, he also endowed it for the needs of the mosque.

Who Was Hazinedarzade Süleyman Bey
Hüsameddin introduces this muhassıl as the grandson of the nephew of Canikli Hacı Ali Pasha. Özcan Mert too established the same kinship in his book on the Çapanoğulları. Abdullah Bay, however, in his article on the waqfs of the Hazinedarzades, does not find this link consistent. In documents of 1794 Mir Ahmed, son of Canikli Süleyman Paşazade Mehmed Pasha in Fatsa, and Hazinedarzade Mustafa in Canik are mentioned separately. According to Bay, the family's name comes from their father's having served as treasurer (hazinedar) to a man of influence. Hazinedarzade Süleyman Ağa too was for a time the hazinedar of Canikli Hacı Ali Pasha. The family's place of origin is very probably the village of Kurd Ahmetlü in the Çarşamba area. Some sources give Süleyman Pasha's father as Behram Ağa, hazinedar of Canikli Ali Pasha. Bay is of the opinion that there was no blood tie with the Canikli family and that the Hazinedarzades came to the fore as a separate dynasty after the Caniklis' fall. The same article also relays an archival record showing that Hazinedarzade Süleyman Ağa was for a time mütesellim of Tayyar Mahmud Pasha. Hüsameddin too, in the events of 1214 [1799], mentions "Hazinedaroğlu Süleyman Bey" as Tayyar's mütesellim of Amasya.
The family's later head Hazinedarzade Süleyman Pasha became muhassıl of Canik in 1808, guardian of Poti (Faş) in the Ottoman-Russian war of 1810, and governor of Trabzon in 1812. In 1818 he was removed from this governorship and sent to the governorship of Alaiye, fell ill, died in Çarşamba and was buried in the courtyard of the Rıdvan Pasha Mosque. The mansion in Ünye is regarded as his work. Whether Süleyman Bey, who became muhassıl of Amasya in 1794, is the same person as this Süleyman Pasha is not stated explicitly in the sources we read; the coincidence of names, region and attachment to Tayyar Pasha strengthens this possibility.
A Muhassıl Against the Nizâm-ı Cedîd, with a Mütesellim Beside Him
Sabit Genç notes that with Hazinedarzade's taking office in July 1794 the enrolment of soldiers for the new army became harder in Amasya. According to Genç, that the mufti Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi, who had been dismissed for being anti-Nizâm-ı Cedîd, was brought back to the muftiship two months later suggests that opponents were protected in the sanjak. That the soldiers could nonetheless be sent is, in the same study, attributed on the basis of Hüsameddin to the effort of Kayalıpaşazade Hacı Süleyman Bey. The muftiship's changing hands four times within a year shows how divided the ulema of the city were in the face of the new order. On the silahdar Lâdikli Abdullah Ağa, mentioned as Hazinedarzade's patron, no information was found in other sources.
The Çevikçe Tekke and Şeyh Hasan Sinan Efendi
According to Kadir Özköse's study on the Halveti tekkes in Amasya, the Çevikçe Tekke stood in the Mehmed Paşa quarter near the Pîrler Tomb, west of the Çilehane (Yakub Pasha) Tekke. It was built in 831 [1428] by Şemseddin Mehmed Kırtâsî, known as "Çevikçe" for his skill in making fine paper; its sheikhdom was left to the Halvetis and its administration to the founder's sons. In 1180 [1766], with Şeyh Hasan Efendi of the Sinaniyye branch of the Halveti order taking the seat of the sheikh, the order's life in the tekke revived. The same study gives Şeyh Hasan's death as 1209 [1795]; this date agrees with the Şevval 1209 Hüsameddin gives.
On his successor, the two accounts diverge. Hüsameddin says his second son Mehmed Şerif Efendi took his place. According to what Özköse relays, however, the sheikhdom of the tekke was run jointly by two persons named Mehmed b. Ali and İsmail b. Ahmed, who withdrew when they were found unfit; in their places Osman Efendi (d. 1248/1832), one of Şeyh Hasan's caliphs, and İsmail Efendi of Akşehir (d. 1259/1843) were brought. After the deaths of the two sheikhs the tekke was converted to a madrasa in 1259 [1843], and its site is not known today.
Abdullah Vecih Efendi, mentioned as Şeyh Hasan's son, would in later years be mufti of Amasya twice. According to the family records relayed by Recep Orhan Özel, Mustafa Mecdî Efendi, who died in 1828, studied in Amasya under Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi, Abdullah Vecih Efendi and Payaslı Mehmed Efendi, and received his icazet (certificate of authorization) from Abdullah Vecih Efendi. It is understood from this that the names contending with one another for the muftiship in this entry were also the teachers of a generation.
On the Hacı Ömer Bey Mescid in Aşağıpazar, converted to a mosque by the will of Topçuoğlu Hacı Abdurrahman Ağa, no information was found in other sources.
