A Line of Five Generations

With this entry Hüsameddin reaches the later link of the Bayrâm Alîzâde family. Combined with the information in the three preceding entries, the line runs as follows: Hacı Bayrâm Alî Ağa (d. 1094 [1683]), his son Hacı Mehmed Ağa, his son Hacı Bayrâm Ağa (d. after 1138 [1725-26]), his son Hacı İsmâîl Efendi, and Bayrâm Efendi, the subject of this entry. No information was found in the sources examined on Seküköylüzâde Hacı Kâşif Mehmed Efendi, who is named as Bayrâm Efendi's teacher.

The Path of a Kadı

The text does not say in which places Bayrâm Efendi served as kadı; it is content with the phrase "a good many towns and cities". In which years he took up his posts, at which madrasa he studied, and whether he left any works is likewise not written. In Ottoman provincial administration, âyan is a broad group that includes members of the learned class and the leading figures of the craftsmen and merchants; scholars such as mollas, kadıs, muftis and madrasa professors were also counted among the âyan. The sentence "he was one of the learned class and of the notables" names these two sides together.

Dates

The death year given, 1220 [1805-06], is softened in the text by "around"; that is, it rests not on a firm record but on an approximate reckoning. No birth year is given.
