In Modern English

As is understood from the court registers and the account register, he was the son of Ali Çelebi, one of the notables of the village of Gevük in Amasya, of Seljuk descent, who was steward of the waqfs of Sultan Mesud and his prince Sultan Altunbaş.

He was a sipahi and lived in Amasya. For a time, as one of the aghas of Geldiklanlı Ali Pasha and, in 1058 [1648-49], of İbşir Mustafa Pasha, he travelled about various places. Then he became mirliva, and when İbşir Pasha was put to death in 1065 [1654-55] he came to Amasya and settled here as one struck by misfortune; he became steward of the Seljuk waqfs and died in 1079 [1668-69].

He was the son-in-law of Osman Bey, son of Pîr Hüseyin Bey, one of the notables of Amasya. His sons were Osman, Halil and Abdurrahman Ağa. Osman Ağa was steward of the Seljuk waqfs and died in 1094 [1682-83]; Halil Ağa, who became steward after him, died in 1101 [1689-90]. Abdurrahman Ağa had died earlier; his son was Abdülkerim Ağa.

The sons of Halil Ağa, İsmail, Ahmed and Selim Ağa, also became stewards; İsmail Ağa died in 1103 [1691-92], Ahmed Ağa in 1124 [1712-13] and Selim Ağa in 1134 [1721-22]. The son of İsmail Ağa, Hacı Osman Ağa, became voyvoda of Havza and died there in 1159 [1746-47]. His sons were es-Seyyid Halil and Mehmed Ağa.

Es-Seyyid Halil Ağa became steward on his father's death; when he died in 1170 [1756-57], es-Seyyid Mehmed Ağa became steward, and on the latter's death in 1176 [1762-63] his son es-Seyyid Hacı Osman Ağa became steward. On this man's death in 1207 [1792-93] his son es-Seyyid Hacı Mehmed Ağa became steward, and on his death in 1246 [1830-31] his sons es-Seyyid Selim, Osman and Mehmed Ağa became stewards jointly.

Es-Seyyid Mehmed Ağa died in 1271 [1854-55], es-Seyyid Selim Ağa, director of the district of Havza, in 1273 [1856-57], and es-Seyyid Osman Ağa in 1282 [1865-66]. The sons of Selim Ağa are Mahmud and Mehmed Ağa, and the sons of es-Seyyid Mehmed Ağa, son of es-Seyyid Mehmed Ağa, are Ahmed and Selim Ağa.

Of these, es-Seyyid Hacı Mahmud Ağa was steward jointly with his brother, a member of the administrative council of the district of Havza, a generous man from a noble family, and died in 1316 [1898-99]. His sons es-Seyyid Ebûbekir, Bayram and Ahmed Efendi had also been stewards. They were called Bayram Beyzâdes.

Seljuk Descent and the Waqfs

The Sultan Mesud of the text is Gıyaseddin II Mesud, the last Anatolian Seljuk sultan; Sultan Altunbaş, or Tâceddin Altunbaş, is his son. In the first half of the fourteenth century Amasya for a time came under Altunbaş's rule and in 1341 was taken by Hâbiloğlu. According to Hüsameddin, Altunbaş's four princes were well known and each lived on the farms assigned to them around Amasya; Mesud Çelebi lived at Havza in his father's place, Keykubad Çelebi at Ladik, Alp Arslan Çelebi at Amasya, while the fourth prince, Keyhüsrev Çelebi, stayed with his father. Hüsameddin also writes that Altunbaş's children and grandchildren were numerous and later divided into three branches. These reports agree regionally with the Gevük Aghas serving as stewards of Seljuk waqfs in the Havza area; but no independent document was found in the sources that were read to show that Ali Çelebi and his family descended from this line. These records of Hüsameddin, based on court and account registers, could not be verified.

İbşir Mustafa Pasha and 1065

The person called İbşir in the text is İpşir Mustafa Pasha. Of Abkhazian origin, İpşir Mustafa Pasha, as governor of Sivas in 1647, was appointed serasker against Varvar Ali Pasha and had him killed on 20 May 1648 [26 Rebîülâhir 1058]; the date 1058 that Hüsameddin gives falls in these events. His grand vizierate began in February 1655; his relations with the sipahis and the janissaries broke down, he handed over the seal after the revolt that began on 8 May 1655, and on 11 May 1655 [5 Receb 1065] he was executed. Hüsameddin's date of 1065 [1654-55] thus agrees. That Bayram Bey, son of Ali Çelebi, returned to Amasya as if in exile after this revolt may be explained by his being one of İpşir Pasha's men; but the text does not say so plainly, and this is an inference.

Gevük, the Bayram Beyzâdes and the Line of Descent

No information was found in the sources that were read about the present state of the village of Gevük, the Pîr Hüseyin Beyzâde family, Hacı Osman Ağa, voyvoda of Havza, Selim Ağa, director of the district of Havza, or Mahmud Ağa, member of the administrative council. The chain of stewards, running for more than two hundred years, is a list that Hüsameddin drew entirely from the court and account registers; it has not been verified independently. The family's being called Bayram Beyzâdes appears to go back to Bayram Bey at the head of the line; this is an inference.
