What a Surre Commissioner Did
The surre was the money, gold and other goods sent each year before the pilgrimage season to be distributed among the people of Mecca and Medina. In the Ottoman period the chief black eunuch (Darüssaade ağası) arranged the surre ceremony in Istanbul, while the surre commissioner was appointed to ensure security along the road and to distribute the surre once it reached the Two Holy Cities. Before 1864, when it was sent overland, the surre procession was held on the twelfth of Rajab or on the days after. Hüsameddin gives 1087 [1676-77] as the year in which Bayrâm Alî Ağa was entrusted with this duty; since his name was not found in other sources, the date rests on this record alone.
Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha and the Rank of Ağa
Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha served as grand vizier from 1661 to 1676 and died of illness on 3 November 1676. According to Hüsameddin, Bayrâm Alî Ağa was among his agas; his service may therefore be supposed to have begun within the grand vizier's years in office, that is, between 1661 and 1676 (inference). The year 1087 given for the surre commission coincides with the year of the grand vizier's death. No source connecting the two was found.
The Pervâne Bey Quarter
One of the people known as Pervâne Bey in Amasya is İzzeddin Mehmed Pervâne, who drew up the endowment deed of the Burmalı Minare Mosque in 1299-1300; the mosque itself was built in 1242 by Ferruh Bey and his brother, the treasurer Yusuf Bey. It is strongly suggested that the quarter's name is related to this Pervâne Bey, but no record stating it directly was found; this is an inference. The quarter's present-day name could not be verified either.
About the Family
In the three entries that follow, Hüsameddin describes later generations of the same family: Bayrâm Ağa, son of his son Mehmed Ağa (d. after 1138 [1725-26]), then Bayrâm Ağa's son İsmâîl Efendi and grandson Bayrâm Efendi (d. around 1220 [1805-06]). The line beginning with Bayrâm Alî Ağa can thus be traced over five generations in the book. No information on Bayrâm Alî Ağa and his family was found in other sources.
