Voivode and Steward

In Ottoman documents the local dynasties referred to as voivode, mütesellim (deputy governor), tax collector and mutasarrıf are also called âyan; where lands were granted as paşmaklık and arpalık, the appointment of local âyan as voivode or mütesellim increased their strength in administration. The path Hüsameddin describes fits this framework: Bayrâm Ağa first acquired wealth as steward of two pashas, then was made voivode in the town where he lived. The years in which he served as voivode, and in whose name, are not in the text; nor could they be verified from any other record.

The Pashas and the Village

No information was found in the sources examined on Zuğulu Timur Süleyman Pasha and his brother Cevher Pasha, on the settlement of Ilısu, or on the Hacı Bayrâmoğulları family. According to the book's own arrangement, this Bayrâm Ağa is the founder of a family distinct from the Bayrâm Alîzâde family of Amasya: that family's root is in the Pervâne Bey quarter of Amasya, while this family's root is in the village of Ilısu in Merzifon.

Merzifon and Its Surroundings

Merzifon is an old settlement dependent on Amasya, founded on the southern slope of Mount Tavşan (Taşan), at the edge of the Merzifon plain. The years after 1176 [1762-63] recorded by Hüsameddin fall in the town's eighteenth-century situation. It is stated that no important events took place in Merzifon in this period and that the town continued its situation of the previous century. Three generations of the family (Bayrâm Ağa, Hacı Alî Efendi, Hacı Mehmed Sa'îd Efendi) are presented in the book only by this short record. No other record was found on the works or posts of Hacı Mehmed Sa'îd Efendi.
