In Modern English

Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddin first arranged the work to which he devoted his life in eight volumes; he had its first volume printed in 1912 and its second volume in 1914.

The value of this work was also appreciated by the Ottoman administration, and copies of the two printed volumes were submitted to the Ministry of Education (Maarif Nezareti) to be placed in libraries. The Ministry too saw that the work should be praised; it was stated that the work's being so broad and detailed was enough to show its value, that it contained especially important information and was the product of great research, and that the province too should appreciate it. In the letter written by the Sivas Director of Education, as stated in the order dated 7 September 1914 (Rumi 25 August 1330), it was reported that, for the work called "Amasya Tarihi" compiled by Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddin of Amasya, Arabic translator of Old Records (Kuyûd-ı Kadîme) at the Exalted Ministry of Imperial Waqfs (Evkaf-ı Hümâyun Nezareti), the province would make the necessary effort so that a monetary reward on behalf of the liva of Amasya would be given to the author, in order that the liva of Amasya might give a fitting reward, and information on the price of the work was requested. Then Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddin was awarded by the Ministry of Education the Maarif medal of the second grade on account of this work and of the effort he showed. The Maarif medal is a medal that in 1910 was found fitting to be given in three grades, in order to encourage first of all teachers who worked toward spreading learning and education in the Ottoman land. Later it is seen that the Maarif medal was given to everyone who served in this field, and for receiving the third-grade medal a requirement of at least five years of teaching was set. It was decided that those who worked five more years would be given the second grade and those who continued their duty ten more years the first-grade medal. It is understood that the author was given the second-grade medal on account of his contribution to the learning and education of the country, taking his length of service into consideration.

Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddin made efforts for many years to have the remaining volumes printed. As a result of these efforts he also had the third and fourth volumes printed (1927-1928). Later, in order to make various corrections in the other volumes or to make good the losses that arose from the fire, he rearranged his work, and the 12 volumes have reached us as a whole.

The difficulties he experienced in the printing of the work are understood from the letter he wrote to the Ministry of Education (Maarif Vekâleti) at that time. The author says in the letter: "Amasya Tarihi is the history of a whole province that is an important part of our exalted homeland. I very much ask that you help your humble servant, who alone has made such a history, which the men of learning of no province have so far been able to make. I have had the third volume printed. If the fourth volume too is printed with the five hundred liras that the Ministry of Education would kindly grant, I will give thanks in the name of the homeland. If it is not possible to fulfil this request of mine, I ask that you at least buy fifty copies each of the second and third volumes that exist and distribute them to libraries. The price, a hundred liras, is not something that would strain the education budget. But this hundred liras is a sum sufficient for the printing of the fourth volume." With these words he asks for help from the education budget for the printing of the fourth volume.

He gave an example of loyalty by stating, in the "Arz-ı Şükran" (thanks) sections at the beginning of the volumes he had printed, from whom he received help. In the second volume he thanked Hayri Bey, Minister of Imperial Waqfs; in the third volume the former governor of Amasya Hilmi Bey, the deputy for Amasya İsmail Hakkı Bey, the Permanent Council of the Province of Amasya, the Director General of Waqfs Mehmed Rüşdü Bey and the Director of Waqfs of Istanbul İsmail Hakkı Bey; in the fourth volume the governor of Amasya Faik Bey and Şirvanî Bahaeddin Efendi of the Permanent Council of the Province of Amasya; and in the remainder of the fourth volume, also placing the note "Amasya Tarihi, which has found the approval of our President, our great leader Kemal Atatürk, who revived the great Turkish race and language, and of our Prime Minister, the blessed İsmet İnönü," he offered his thanks to the governor of Amasya Kadri, to Mr. Sıdkı, son of Veysi Bey, chairman of the People's Party, and to the members of the provincial permanent council. But the author, unfortunately, could not have what comes after the fourth volume printed, and these remained as the author's copy.

What the Maarif Medal Is

The Maarif medal is a medal issued in 1910 in the Ottoman Empire to reward teachers and müderrises. According to the entry in the Türk Maarif Ansiklopedisi, the Ministry of Education sent a letter to the Sublime Porte on this subject on 14 March 1910, on 14 May 1910 the issuing of a medal with three grades was found fitting, and with the decree (irade) dated 15 May 1910 the medal gained official status. The medal has three grades and is given for life. To receive the medal, teachers were expected to have earned a good record for at least five years in their profession. A teacher who received the third grade could receive the second grade after five years and the first grade after ten years. That the awarding of the second-grade medal to Hüsameddin was determined by his length of service is stated only by the text at hand; no other record of this determination could be found.

The Request for Help and the Difficulty of Printing

The letter Hüsameddin wrote to the Ministry of Education shows how limited the support was with which city historiography was carried on in those years. The author asks for five hundred liras and, if this is not possible, proposes the purchase of fifty copies each of the second and third volumes. The author names a hundred liras as a sum sufficient for the printing of the fourth volume. The listing, in each volume, of the names of those who helped shows that governors, deputies, waqf directors and members of the provincial council contributed to the printing of the work.

Printing Dates

The manuscript copy of the first volume is dated 1910; according to Köksal's paper the printed volume was published two years after this, in the Hijri year 1330. This information is consistent with the date 1912 in the text. The TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi also writes that the third and fourth volumes were printed in 1927 and 1928 and that the remainder of the fourth volume came out in 1935.
