In Modern English

He was from Amasya. It was understood from a sayyid certificate that I found in Köprü, given in 975 [1567-68] by the naqib al-ashraf es-Seyyid Tâceddîn Efendi to his son es-Seyyid Ahmed Efendi, that he was the son of es-Seyyid Mansûr Çelebi of the line of the Danişmendid rulers, who in turn was the son of Şerîfe Ayşe Hatun daughter of es-Seyyid Danişmend Gâzi er-Rifâ'î.

He was one of the sayyids and notables known in Amasya as "Mazlûm Melik", and on the death of es-Seyyid Mehmed Çelebi he became deputy naqib al-ashraf (nakîbü'l-eşrâf) of Amasya. He was naqib of the sayyids of Amasya for more than ten years and died in 974 [1566-67]. He was a learned, good, generous, noble man of simple heart. His son Kadı'l-Harameyn es-Seyyid Ahmed Efendi comes below.

The Office of Nakîbü'l-eşrâf

The nakîbü'l-eşrâf was, in the Ottoman state, the official who kept the status and records of the sayyids and sharifs and looked after their rights. There was a chief naqib (başnakîb) at the centre, and in places such as provinces and sanjaks deputies served in his name. Mazlûm Melik in the text also carried out the deputyship of this office in Amasya.

The Claim of Danişmendid Descent

Hüsameddin bases Mazlûm Melik's descent from the Danişmendid line on a sayyid certificate he saw in Köprü. The certificate bears the date 975 [1567-68]; that is, it is a document drawn up a year after the person died and given to his son. The link between Danişmend Gâzi and Seyyid Danişmend and the nisba "er-Rifâ'î" could not be verified with another source.

The biography of Mazlûm Melik's son Kadı'l-Harameyn Ahmed Efendi is given separately later in the book, as Hüsameddin says. No other written source about this entry was found.
