In Modern English

He was from Köprü. He is the son of İdris Bey, brother of the famous Taşan Bey, emir of Köprü. Being one of the men of the emir of Amasya, Hacı Şadgeldi Pasha, he drove out Haydar Bey of the Taşanoğulları and became bey of the Kedağra (Köprü) district. He died after 775 [1373-74]. His line was called "Abdâllu, Abdaloğulları". Of these, Hasan Bey is the famous bey of Kedağra.

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • birâder: brother
  • ricâl: men, leading men
  • def' etmek: to repel, to drive away
  • kazâ: an administrative district like today's ilçe

Köprü and the Taşanoğulları

The Köprü in the text is today's Vezirköprü. The same place also appears in old records under the name Kedağra. Taşan Bey is the head of the family called the Taşanoğulları. The beylik was founded around 1350 and ended in 1398; it ruled the area around Vezirköprü, Havza and Merzifon. Taşan Dağı takes its name from him; Taşan Bey settled in this mountainous region after 1366. Among his sons are counted Bali Ahmed, Ali, Hasan and Şahin Beys. Hüsameddin, however, names Haydar Bey here. In compilations based on Hüsameddin's book, Haydar Bey appears as emir of Köprü. These records may indicate different branches or brothers of the same family; the exact relationship could not be determined from another source.

The Taşanoğulları became attached to the Ottomans in 1393, after Yıldırım Bayezid defeated Kadı Burhâneddin at Çorum and took Amasya. That Abdâl Bey replaced Haydar Bey as a man of Hacı Şadgeldi points to a rivalry between the Taşanoğulları and the Şadgeldi emirate. Şadgeldi was emir of Amasya between 1359 and 1381; for this reason Abdâl Bey's death date of 775 [1373-74] falls right in the middle of that emirate.

Name and Lineage

No record of İdris Bey and his son Abdâl Bey was found other than Hüsameddin. That the lineage was called "Abdâllu" is likewise learned only from this book. The statement that Hasan Bey was "the famous bey of Kedağra" therefore rests on the local memory that Hüsameddin relays.
