In Modern English

He is the son of Hacı Kadirzâde Hâfız Hacı Mehmed Ağa, son of Hacı Mustafa Ağa, son of Hacı Abdülkadir Ağa, of the notables of the Kübceğiz quarter of Amasya, who died in 1177 [1763-64], and the nephew of Hacı Hüseyin Ağa, steward of the imperial stirrup.

On his father's death he emerged as a member of the pilgrims' and notables' councils. In 1182 [1768-69], in the Russian war, together with his brother Hacı Seyyid Mustafa Ağa, he gathered one hundred and fifty volunteer soldiers and went to war as their chief (başbuğ).

In 1183 [1769-70] they had helped Sadık Mehmed Pasha, mutasarrıf of Amasya, and Mehmed Pasha, the miftâh ağası, to succeed and had rendered valuable services; but when these pashas were routed in 1184 [1770-71] and Mehmed Pasha was martyred, he and his brother returned to collect soldiers.

Canikli Hacı Ali Pasha, their adversary, presented this return as flight and declared the helpless men fugitives; on the strength of a firman he obtained in 1184, he had them killed in Amasya. He also put their uncle Hacı Hüseyin Ağa in a difficult position. They were a long-established family.

His son Seyyid Hacı Mehmed Ağa was one of the renowned notables and died after 1243 [1827-28]. His grandsons are Seyyid Hacı Mehmed Nuri Efendi, who, while chief clerk of waqfs in Amasya, became director of waqfs of the Çamlık sanjak in Albania and died in Amasya in 1331 [1912-13], and Seyyid Hacı Mustafa Rıfat Efendi. Hacı Nuri Efendizâde Ahmed Atıf Efendi was alive.

The Russian War

The war of 1182 [1768-69] is the war between the Ottoman State and Russia that began in 1768 and ended with the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca on 26 July 1774. The war had been declared in September 1768 (Cemâziyelevvel 1182), which agrees with the date 1182 that Hüsameddin gives. That the Kadirzades set out on the campaign with a hundred and fifty volunteers shows that in those years the notables were a local power that brought their own forces into the war.

Canikli Hacı Ali Pasha

Canikli Hacı Ali Pasha, mentioned as the adversary, is the founder of the Canikli dynasty in the Canik region. According to the sources he took part in the war that began in 1768, returned to Canik and cleared the Samsun and Amasya area of bandits, and eliminated some of his rivals. The sanjak of Amasya was granted to him as a life-tenure tax farm (mâlikâne) on 30 May 1772. The same source states that with the granting of Amasya to the Caniklis in 1772 the rivalry with the Çapanoğlus began, and that the notables of Amasya later, in late 1778, took refuge with Çapanoğlu Mustafa Bey.

Hüsameddin ties the executions to 1184 [1770-71]; the formal granting of Amasya to Canikli is in 1772 in these sources. The difference between the two dates may arise from the confusion of the events spread over the years; since no other source was found describing the brothers' deaths, this difference could not be resolved. No information could be found on Sadık Mehmed Pasha or the miftâh ağası Mehmed Pasha either.

A Later Branch of the Family

The last piece of information Hüsameddin gives shows a branch of the family extending into the twentieth century: Mehmed Nuri Efendi, who went to Albania as director of waqfs of the Çamlık sanjak while chief clerk of waqfs in Amasya, died in Amasya in 1331. No separate information could be found on the Kübceğiz quarter.
