The Sultaniye Madrasa
The Sultan Bayezid Madrasa mentioned in the entry is part of the complex that Bayezid II had built in Amasya, and is also known as the Sultaniye. According to its inscription, the complex's mosque was completed in Receb 891 (July 1486); the madrasa must have been built in the same years. Located on the bank of the Yeşilırmak, to the right of the mosque, the madrasa consists of a square-planned domed classroom-mescit and a colonnaded courtyard with a şadırvan in its middle, and eighteen cells with hearths. The building survived through a good restoration and was used for many years as the provincial public library.
According to Hüsameddin, the müderrisship of this madrasa was reserved for the muftis of Amasya; its first teacher was the famous şeyhülislam Zenbilli Ali Efendi. A detailed list of the müderrises of the madrasa is found in Cahit Baltacı's work Osmanlı Medreseleri. This entry also gives the lifespan of one of the names in the list, a young müderris who took office in 1805.
A Müderris Who Died Young
Hüsameddin writes that this müderris died before completing thirty years of age. His eight years of teaching and his being his teacher's son-in-law show that in scholarly families posts and marriages ran together: the father-in-law is both his teacher and the müderris before him. No separately verifiable information was found on Oluslu Osman Efendi and Şeyhzâde Abdullah Vecih Efendi.
