In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He is the son of Seyyid Hacı Mehmed Ağa bin Hacı Hâfız Ahmed Efendi bin Yeniceli Hâfız Hacı Mehmed Efendi, one of the notables of the Hacı İlyas quarter. While his father was alive he was in the household of the vizier Seyyid Mustafa Pasha of Amasya and became his silahdar, and during the sadaret kaymakamlığı he became kapıcıbaşı.

When the pasha was dismissed and sent into retirement in Cemaziyelâhir 1203, he came to Amasya and in Şevval went to the Russian war. Because he showed valor in the battles, in Receb 1204 he became guardian of Tutrakan with the rank of mîrimîrân.

In Receb 1217 he became mutasarrıf of the sanjak of Muş and went from Amasya to Erzurum. Through the efforts of Amasyalızâde Hacı İbrahim Efendi, defterdar of the new revenues (îrâd-ı cedîd) and one of the notables of the state, on the twentieth of Şevval of the same year he became governor of Adana with the rank of vizier; in Cemaziyelâhir 1218, while guardian of Brâila, he died there in Zilhicce.

The Career Chain of a Man of Amasya

The entry shows an exemplary career: an ağa of Amasya, first trained in a vizier's household, then taking successive posts in the provincial administration: Tutrakan, Bilecik, Beyşehir, Aksaray, Kırşehir, Cyprus, Karahisar-ı Sahib, Alâiye, İçel, Muş, Adana and Brâila. According to Hüsameddin's footnote, this information was taken from the official tevcih (appointment) registers found in the cellar of Hagia Sophia; that is, the entry rests on documents.

That a brother in the family was defterdar and that his son reached the rank of pasha shows the family's place in state service. The last part of the entry mentions the branches of the line down to the twentieth century; the man who died in 1330 with the nickname "Şibşib Hoca" is of this line. The hijri year 1203 corresponds to about 1788-89, 1218 to about 1803-04, and 1330 to about 1912.

No information was found in other sources on the vizier Seyyid Mustafa Pasha of Amasya mentioned in the text, on Amasyalızâde Hacı İbrahim Efendi, or on the Yenicelizâde family.
