Who the Arpacızâdes Are
The entry describes not a single person but several distinct Amasya families known by the name "Arpacızâde". The "arpacı" at the head of the name appears to be a profession-related nickname of the first ancestors of these families; Hüsameddin does not explain it. Since the same nickname recurs in different branches, it is also not known whether there is a direct kinship among them. For this reason Hüsameddin said "several lineages".
The record counts four branches. The first is Nûreddîn Hamza Çelebi, with the epithet scholar, and his son Muhyiddîn Mehmed Çelebi. The second is es-Seyyid İbrâhim Efendi, who died in 1079 [1668-69], and Hüsameddin states that he gives his biography separately. The third is Arpacı Ali Ağazâde el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi together with sheikhs such as Şeyh Osmân Efendi and Abdurrahman Efendi. The fourth, with Arpacı Mustafa Ağazâde el-Hâc Ali Ağa and his son el-Hâc Osmân Efendi, passes into the ayan class. The sentence "His line today is among the eşraf of Amasya" describes the period in which the author lived, that is, the early twentieth century.
Amasya in the Ottoman period was a city known for its madrasas; in 1870 31 madrasas and forty-four müderrises were recorded in the city.
No record was found for Nûreddîn Hamza Çelebi and Muhyiddîn Mehmed Çelebi other than Hüsameddin. In the search results another Nûreddîn Hamza, known by the nickname Üçbaş, is mentioned; this person was born elsewhere and was a scholar who served as müderris at the madrasa of Sultan Bayezid II in Amasya, and no connection of his with the Arpacızâde family can be understood from these records.
