The Baltacıs of the Dârüssaâde Ağası

In palace service the baltacıs formed two separate groups. The baltacıs of the Old Palace (Teberdârân-ı Sarây-ı Atîk) served and guarded the harem in Topkapı Palace and the members of the Old Palace, the princes and the sultans outside the palace, and were directly subordinate to the Dârüssaâde ağası. Their highest superiors after the Dârüssaâde ağası were the steward of the baltacıs, the company commanders and the room heads; the senior stewards and room heads were promoted to müteferrika. The long-locked (zülüflü) baltacıs, by contrast, were a separate corps who lived in Topkapı Palace and served in the Enderun and the harem. Hüsameddin's phrase "baltacıs of the Dârüssaâde ağası" should, on this information, point to the baltacıs of the Old Palace; this is an inference.

Hüsameddin writes that Emîn Mehmed Ağa moved from steward of the baltacıs, which he became in 1236 [1820-21], to the rank of kapıcıbaşı in 1242 [1826-27]; in which provinces he served as deputy governor after becoming kapıcıbaşı is not said. No information was found in other sources on the man himself, on his being from Amasya, or on the dates of his posts.
