In Modern English

He was from Mecidözü, the son of Abdullah. He became known in Amasya as the scribe of Hacı Emîn Mehmed Ağa there. Later he came to Amasya, where he became ihtisab scribe, and in 1263 [1846-47] dîvân efendisi. For some nine years he handled the mutasarrıfs (the governors of the sanjak) well, and he died in 1272 [1855-56] at the age of seventy-two. He was a scribe, a münşî (a master of correspondence and document-writing) and a man who ran affairs with foresight.

His sons are Osmân, Mustafa, Abdullah, Ahmed Kâmil and İbrâhim Edhem Efendis. The sons of Osmân Efendi are Halil, Mehmed Efendis and Ali Efendi, the battalion clerk, known as Mustafa Efendizâde. Abdullah Efendizâde Hâfız Mehmed Nuri Efendi, who was president of the municipality, was a man of learning and a şeyhü'l-kurrâ.

The other man, Taşköprülüzâde el-Hâc Emîn Mehmed Efendi, was the son of el-Hâc Mehmed Sâdık Efendi; he too was among the men of learning. When his father died in 1254 [1838-39] he became kürsü şeyhi of the Yörgüç Pasha Mosque, and he died in 1279 [1862-63]. His son Şerîf Hüseyin Efendi took his place.

Mecidözü

In Hüsameddin's book Mecidözü is one of the seven districts of the sanjak of Amasya; in the section on the population and administrative structure of the sanjak it is listed together with the districts of Köprü, Lâdik, Havza, Merzifon and Amasya. According to the same section, Zünnûnâbâd was at one point merged with Mecidözü. The book also contains eighteenth- and nineteenth-century records of local notable families of Mecidözü, known as the Avkatlıoğulları and the Kara Ahmedoğulları; the book draws no link between these families and the Dîvân Efendisi.

The Dîvân Efendisi's Grandson

In the section on madrasas, the first professor of the five-room Mehmed Bey Madrasa, built of wood in 1308 [1890-91] by Kurd Beyzâde Mehmed Bey, is named as the reciter "Dîvân Efendisizâde Hâfız Mehmed Nûrî Efendi"; he is said to be a relative of Mehmed Bey, who built the madrasa. This name and the "Abdullah Efendizâde Hâfız Mehmed Nuri Efendi" of this entry appear to be the same person: both bear the same epithet, and both are hâfız and şeyhü'l-kurrâ. This matching is an inference; Hüsameddin does not state it.

The Yörgüç Pasha Mosque

The Taşköprülüzâde Emîn Mehmed Efendi in the last paragraph of the entry is the kürsü şeyhi of the Yörgüç Pasha Mosque. The mosque was built in Amasya in 1428 by Yörgüç Pasha. After his governorship of Amasya, Yörgüç Pasha became lala (tutor) to Prince Murad, the son of Çelebi Mehmed, and then rose to the vizierate. The building is one of Amasya's inverted-T-plan mosques; its walls are of cut stone, and the red and white marble in the load-bearing walls and the window arches gives it a colorful appearance. The portico is part of the interior of the mosque.

Hüsameddin describes the madrasa at the mosque as follows: inside and in front of the mosque there were several stone cells; according to the waqf deed they had been built as a madrasa and counted among the first-class madrasas. The administrator Yörgüç Paşazâde Mustafa Bey built one more madrasa, of wood with twelve rooms, east of the mosque courtyard in 1044 [1634-35]. Entry 356 of the book also mentions the same mosque: Taşköprülüzâde el-Hâc Emîn Mehmed Efendi studied in the teaching circle of Ürgüplü Hacı Ahmed Efendi and died in 1227 [1812] as kürsü şeyhi of the Yörgüç Pasha Mosque; his son Sâdık Mehmed Efendi and his brother el-Hâc Abdullah Efendi are also counted among men of learning. It is possible that el-Hâc Mehmed Sâdık Efendi, father of the Taşköprülüzâde in this entry, and Sâdık Mehmed Efendi here are the same person; Hüsameddin does not say so, and this is an inference. Yörgüç Pasha gave his name to a well-known branch of the Atabeyzade family; according to one study, this family's place in Amasya goes back to the Seljuk atabey Nasıreddin Ahmed.

No information was found in other sources about the Dîvân Efendisi himself, Hacı Emîn Mehmed Ağa and the names of the mutasarrıfs.
