In Modern English

He was from Köprü. He was the son of Ali Efendi, one of the men of learning. His father died when he was small, and his mother married Hidâyet Efendi of Lâdik; because he grew up with him he was called "Hidâyetzâde". After his studies he became clerk of the Köprü court, and in 1308 [1890-91] he went to the Hijaz. In the month of Zilhicce of that year he died in Mecca. He was a learned man, a jurist, knowledgeable in the law of inheritance, and of a distinguished family.

His sons are Ali Râif, Ahmed Hidâyet and Mehmed Şevket Efendis. Ali Râif Efendi took his place and became clerk of the sharia court of Köprü. Although he was dismissed at one point, in 1321 [1903-04], during my term as deputy judge, he was again appointed clerk of the sharia court.

The Journey to the Hijaz and His Death

Hidâyetzâde went to the Hijaz in 1308 [1890-91] and died in Mecca in the month of Zilhicce of the same year. The text does not state the purpose of the journey. Dying in the Hijaz is not the only such case in Hüsameddin's book. Hâfız Mehmed Şükrü Efendi, the only son of Hocazâde İbrâhim Efendi in volume 6, went to the Hijaz in 1312 [1894-95] with a large company and died in Mecca, and his father was deeply grieved by the news. Hüsameddin himself went to Damascus and the Hijaz a second time in 1319 [1901-02] as deputy judge for the Surre-i Hümâyûn.

Hüsameddin's Term as Deputy Judge of Köprü

The phrase "niyâbetim esnâsında" in the entry belongs to the author himself. On returning from the Hijaz Hüsameddin was appointed naib of Köprü and took up the post on the first day of Muharrem 1321, that is, 30 March 1903. Ali Râif Efendi's reappointment as clerk took place during this term of office.

Hüsameddin also gives briefly how the child who lost his father grew up and with whom. Lâdikli Hidâyet Efendi, whom his mother married, may be the Hidâyet Efendi who appears in entry 374 of the book as the nephew of the Blind Mufti; both are from Lâdik and they have the same name. Hüsameddin does not link the two entries; this is an inference.
