In Modern English

She is from Amasya. She was the daughter of Mustafa Bey, son of Hacı Şadgeldi Pasha, ruler of Amasya. She was the first wife of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed Khan, who came as governor of Amasya in place of her father. From this marriage were born her daughters Aişe, Hatice and Fatma Sultans and her sons Sultan Murad and Sultan Mustafa Khan; this was learned from the waqf records.

The Şadgeldi Family and Çelebi Mehmed

The emir who took Amasya from Ali Bey, son of Eretna, was Hacı Şadgeldi. When he died, his son Ahmed defended the city against Kadı Burhâneddin with the support of Bayezid the Thunderbolt. Bayezid finally annexed Amasya to the Ottoman lands (1398) and left its administration to his son Çelebi Mehmed. After the Battle of Ankara (1402) Çelebi Mehmed withdrew to Amasya with his forces and used it as a base against his brothers. This was the position of Çelebi Mehmed, whom Hüsameddin calls "the governor who came in place of her father". The place of Mustafa Bey within the Şadgeldi family is not explained in the sources read; from the phrase "Şadgeldi Paşazâde" it can be understood that he was a son or grandson of Şadgeldi, but which of the two remains unclear.

The Question of Murad II's Mother

Murad II was born in Amasya in June 1404. According to Halil İnalcık's report, Hüsameddin writes in vol. III of Amasya Tarihi (p. 180) that Murad's mother was Şehzade Hatun, daughter of Divitdâr Ahmed Pasha, one of the notables of Amasya; the same place records that Murad was a son of Mehmed by a concubine. Here, by contrast, Murad's mother is given as Emine Hund Hatun. The most widely accepted view is that the mother was Emine Hatun, daughter of Nâsırüddin Mehmed of the Dulkadirids; a 15th-century historian, however, writes that Murad's mother was a concubine. Of the two sons Hüsameddin lists, Mustafa was, according to İnalcık, Murad's younger brother (Murad was seventeen and Mustafa twelve when Murad came to the throne). İnalcık reports that Murad had four brothers and seven sisters in all; Hüsameddin mentions only the three daughters and two sons born of Emine Hund Hatun.

Among the wives of Murad II, Yeni Hatun, daughter of Mustafa Bey of the Şadgeldi family, is named; according to some historians Yeni Hatun was the wife not of Murad but of his son Şehzade Alâeddin Ali. Another wife was Hundi Ümmügülsüm Hatun. Whether the name "Emine Hund Hatun" refers to the same person as one of these names is unclear (inference). The waqf records on which Hüsameddin relies are likewise not shown in the text.
