Elvân Çelebi
Elvân Çelebi was the son of Âşık Paşa; his grandfather was Muhlis Paşa and his great-grandfather Baba İlyâs-ı Horasânî, and he belonged to this Turkmen family of sheikhs. He spent most of his life in the lodge he had built in the village named after him, between Çorum and Mecitözü. Hüsameddin writes that these buildings were built in 753 [1352]. His date of death is not certain; since the closing year of his work Menâkıbü'l-kudsiyye points to 760 (1358-59), it can be said that he died a few years after that. His grave is in the tomb in his lodge. The lodge was the most important center of the Vefâî order after Baba İlyas's lodge in Amasya. No genealogy supporting the text's statement "of the line of Elvân Çelebi" could be read in another source. Since more than two centuries lie between İn'âm Bey's death in 1013 [1604-05] and Elvân Çelebi, this statement remains unverified.
The Shirvan Wars
Shirvan became a Safavid province in 1538 when Shah Tahmasb ended the rule of the Shirvanshahs. Because its people were Sunni, many revolts broke out against Safavid rule and they often asked the Ottomans for help. When the Ottoman-Safavid war began in 1578, the commander-in-chief Lala Mustafa Pasha led the army to victory at Çıldır (9 August 1578) and at Koyungeçidi (September 1578); Özdemiroğlu Osman Pasha was raised to the vizierate and left in the region as beylerbey of Shirvan and Dagestan. In May 1583 Osman Pasha won a great victory in the battle known as the "Torch Battle" (Meşale savaşı), and in October of the same year he left the region. Hüsameddin does not say in which Shirvan battle İn'âm Bey showed valor. He may have taken part in one of these campaigns, but since no year is given, this is an inference.
Prince Mustafa of Amasya and Seyyid Ahmed Bey
Amasya was one of the princely centers where Süleyman the Magnificent's son Şehzade Mustafa also served as sanjak governor. Hamdullah Hamdi Çelebi's service as chancellor belongs to this period. No other source was found that would state the reason for and circumstances of Seyyid Ahmed Bey's being killed "unjustly" in 1038 [1628-29] while sanjak governor of Kayseri. The event is mentioned again in the next entry.
