631'de Erzincân'a gelip ba'dehû Amasya etrâfına yerleşdirilen [366] Harezmîler'in ümerâsından idi.
Müte'addid eski Türk târîhlerinin verdiği ma'lûmata nazaran sülâle-i celîle-i Âl-i Osmân'ın cedd-i a'lâsı bulunan Süleyman Şâh bin Kaya Alp bin Kızıl Boğa, kabîlesi halkıyla bu Emîr Berke Hân'ın ma'iyyetinde olarak Amasya etrâfına gelip agleb-i ihtimâl üzere Mecîd Özü kazâsı dâhilinde Kara Ya'kûb nâhiyesine merbût olan kurâdan Kayı Karyesi mevki'inde sâkin oldukları münâsebetle buraya "Kayı Karyesi" dendiği zann edilir.
Amasya vâlîsi Emîr Berke Hân, şedîdü'ş-şekîme, gâyet müdebbir ve şecî' bir zât olduğu münâsebetle saltanat ve memleket aleyhinde hiss eylediği ufak bir hareketi kemâl-i şiddetle men' ediyor, hânkâhın nüfûzuna meydân vermiyor idi. Rûm İsâk, bunun zamânında tasavvur etdiği teşkîlâtı îfâ ve makâsıd-ı hafiyyesini ta'kîb ve icrâ edemeyeceğini idrâk ederek Emîr Berke'nin def'ine çalışıyor, fakat Sultân Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd'ın Emîr Berke'ye olan i'timâdı pek kuvvetli olduğunu anladıkda, emîri Amasya'dan kaldırmak için sultân-ı müşârün-ileyhin vücûdunu izâle etmeğe azm ediyor, bu cinâyeti "Köpek" vâsıtasıyla yapıyordu. [367]
Çünkü Ikdu'l-Cümân, Câmiu'd-Düvel, Târîh-i İbni Bîbî gibi tevârîh-i mühimmenin sarâhati üzere sultân-ı müşârün-ileyhin şehzâdesi bulunan Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev'in atabegi bâlâda ismi mezkûr olan Emîr Sa'deddîn Köpek idi. Bu Köpek'in Rûm İsâk'a müntesib olduğuna dâ'ir bir sarâhat-i târîhiyye yok ise de Köpek ile İsâk'ın harekât ve icrâ'âtı tedkîk olunursa bunların aralarında bir münâsebet-i tâmme olduğunu anlamamak kâbil değildir.
Bâlâda tahrîr edildiği üzere Sultân Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd, üç sene zarfında yek-diğerini müte'âkib üç kavî düşmanı harben def' etmekle bîtâb ve Carmagun'un inhizâmından dolayı Moğol hükümdârı Oktay Ka'ân dahi münfa'il olmuşdu. Oktay Ka'ân 633'de bu inhizâmı telâfî için Sultân Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd'a gönderdiği sefîr ile kendisine itâ'at etmesini teklîf eyledi.
Sultân Alâ'eddîn bu teklîfi redd etmek tarafdârı olduğu hâlde kendi ümerâsı ve gelen sefîr-i müslim sultân-ı müşârün-ileyhi iknâ' etmekle Oktay Ka'ân'a mutâva'at eylediğini müş'ir hedâyâ-yı lâyıka irsâl ederek ehl-i İslâmı görünür belâdan kurtarıyordu. Fakat işte bu itâ'at, husemâ-yı İslâm tarafından sultân-ı müşârün-ileyhin izâle-i vücûduna bir âlet olarak i'zâm ediliyor, sultânü'l-müslimîn olan Keykubâd, kuvvet ve kudreti var iken putperest olan Oktay Ka'ân'a inkıyâd etmekle dîn-i İslâma ihânet etmiş olduğu efkâr-ı avâma telkîn olunuyordu.
Târîh-i İbni Bîbî'de mezkûr olduğu üzere 634 muharreminde Amasya [368] vâlîsi Emîr Berke Hân'ın akrabâsından olup bundan akdem Erzincân emâretine nasb edilen Emîr Seyfeddîn Kır Hân Sivas emâretine nakl olunarak Berke Hân'ın takviye olunması Rûm İsâk'ı telâşa düşürmüş olmalıdır ki Konya'da mukaddemâtı ihzâr edilen cinâyet tesrî' ediliyor, efkâr-ı avâmı zehirleyen telkînât-ı muzırra sultân-ı müşârün-ileyhin şehzâdesi Keyhusrev'in aklını alıyor, pederine karşı keskin bir düşman oluyor, atabegi bulunan Sa'deddîn Köpek gâfil şehzâdeyi, pederini tesmîm etmeğe teşvîk ediyordu.
Hulâsa Târîh-i İbni Bîbî ve Ikdü'l-Cümân'da mezkûr olduğu üzere Sultân Alâ'eddîn Keykubâd-ı Selçûkî 634 senesi şevvâlinin dördüncü gecesinde mesmûmen vefât edib şehzâde-i gâfili Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev Konya hükümdârı ve atabegi olan Sa'deddîn Köpek sâhib-i devleti, ya'nî vezîr-i a'zamı olarak hall ü akd-i umûr-ı İslâm, Köpek elinde kalıyordu.
Câmiu'd-Düvel'de mezkûr olduğu üzere sâhib-i a'zam Sa'deddîn Köpek, mevki' ve nüfûzunu tahkîm için meşâhîr-i ümerâdan Tâceddîn İbrâhim Pervâne Bey'i Ankara vâlîliğine nasb ederek dâ'ire-i saltanatdan teb'îd ediyor, nâzıru'l-ceyş olan emîr-i meşhûr Kemâleddîn Kâmyâr'ı yeni pâdişâha sû'-i kasd etmek töhmeti isnâd ederek öldürüyor, hulâsa kendisine mu'ârız olanları her hâlde ya sürüyor yâhud ifnâ ediyordu.
Her hâlinde bâtıniyye pîri bulunan Hasan bin Sabbâh'ı taklîd etmekle halkın nazar-ı dikkatini celb etmişdi.
Baba İshâk Kefersûdî, teşebbüsât-ı âtiyesine mâni' olan zevât-ı hamiyyet-simâtı Konya'da Köpek vâsıtasıyla ber-taraf etdiği esnâda Ankara vâlîsi Tâceddîn İbrâhim Bey'i de mâni'-i teşebbüsâtı görmüş olmalıdır ki sâhib-i a'zam Sa'deddîn Köpek, Câmiu'd-Düvel'de mezkûr olduğu üzere vâlî-i müşârün-ileyhi töhmet-i zinâ ile Konya'ya celb ve recm etdirmekle 636'da bîçâreyi bi-gayri hakkın ifnâ etmiş idi.
Ankara vâlîsi İbrâhim Bey'in katlinden sonra nevbet-i tenkîl, Amasya'da kâ'in Harezmîler'e geliyordu. Baba İshâk, teşebbüsâtına mâni' gördüğü Amasya vâlîsi Berke Hân'ı ve Harezmîler'i Amasya'dan kaldırmak için lâzım gelen şikâyâtı tasnî' ederek Harezmîler'in hurûc edeceğini Konya'ya yazdırıyor, Köpek vâsıtasıyla Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev'i iknâ'a çalışıyordu.
Harezmîler'i Sultân Alâ'eddîn Selçûkî ümerâdan Kemâleddîn Kâmyâr vâsıtasıyla celb ederek memleket-i Selçûkiyye'ye iskân etdiği münâsebetle cân-siperâne îfâ-yı vezâ'if ediyorlardı. Husûsiyle Tatarlar'ın Selçûkîler'e karşı vaz'iyyeti pek hasmâne olup 634'de Trabzon kralı olan Yani Komennus müterakkıb-ı fırsat bir hâlde idi. Selçûkîler'in en ziyâde muhtâc-ı kuvvet olduğu bir sırada Harezmîler'in memleket-i Selçûkiyye'den ihrâc edilmesi hükûmet-i Selçûkiyye'yi mahva kadar sürüklemişdir.
In Modern English
He was one of the emirs of the Khwarazmians who came to Erzincan in 631 [1233-34] and were then settled around Amasya. As stated in the Ikdü'l-Cümân, he was the son of Devlet Han bin Kara Arslan and a well-known emir of Celâleddîn Khwarazmshah, and in 632 [1234-35] he became governor of Amasya. Kır Han, one of his relatives, had been appointed to the emirate of Erzincan; each of the Khwarazmian emirs named above had become emir of one livâ (sanjak).
According to the information given by many old Turkish histories, Süleyman Şah bin Kaya Alp bin Kızıl Boğa, the earliest ancestor of the glorious Ottoman dynasty, came with the people of his tribe into the Amasya region in the retinue of this Emîr Berke Hân, and most probably settled at the place called Kayı Karyesi among the villages attached to the nahiye of Kara Yakub within the kaza of Mecîd Özü. It is thought that the place was called "Kayı Karyesi" for this reason.
Because Emîr Berke Hân, governor of Amasya, was a man of stern nature, very prudent and brave, he prevented with extreme severity even the smallest movement he sensed against the sultanate and the country, and did not allow the khanqah's influence free rein. The Greek Isaac, understanding that in his time he could not carry out the organisation he had planned or pursue and implement his hidden aims, was trying to do away with Emîr Berke. Seeing that Sultan Alâeddîn Keykubad's trust in Emîr Berke was very strong, he decided, in order to remove the emir from Amasya, to do away with the said sultan himself, and committed this murder through "Köpek".
For according to the plain account of important histories such as the Ikdü'l-Cümân, the Câmiu'd-Düvel and the Târîh-i İbn Bîbî, the atabeg of the said sultan's son Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev was Emîr Sa'deddîn Köpek, named above. Although there is no plain historical record that this Köpek was attached to the Greek Isaac, if the movements of Köpek and Isaac are examined, it is impossible not to understand that there was a complete relation between them.
As written above, Sultan Alâeddîn Keykubad had been wearied by repelling three powerful enemies in war one after another within three years, and the Mongol ruler Ögeday Kağan had been enraged by Carmagun's defeat. In 633 [1235-36], to make up for this defeat, Ögeday Kağan proposed through an envoy sent to Sultan Alâeddîn Keykubad that he obey him.
Although Sultan Alâeddîn was in favour of rejecting this proposal, when his own emirs and the Muslim envoy who had come persuaded the said sultan, he spared the Islamic world a visible calamity by sending suitable gifts announcing that he submitted to Ögeday Kağan. But precisely this submission was magnified by the enemies of Islam as a tool for doing away with the said sultan; it was spread among the people that Keykubad, the sultan of the Muslims, while he had power and might, was betraying the religion of Islam by submitting to the idolater Ögeday Kağan.
As stated in the Târîh-i İbn Bîbî, in Muharrem 634 [1236] Emîr Seyfeddîn Kır Han, a relative of Emîr Berke Hân, governor of Amasya, who had earlier been appointed to the emirate of Erzincan, was transferred to the emirate of Sivas, and Berke Hân was thereby strengthened; this must have alarmed the Greek Isaac, for the murder being prepared in Konya was hastened. The harmful suggestions that poisoned the people's thinking took possession of the mind of the said sultan's son Keyhusrev, who became a sharp enemy to his father; and his atabeg Sa'deddîn Köpek was encouraging the heedless prince to poison his father.
In short, as stated in the Târîh-i İbn Bîbî and the Ikdü'l-Cümân, the Seljuk Sultan Alâeddîn Keykubad died poisoned on the fourth night of Şevval in the year 634. The heedless prince Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev became ruler of Konya, and his atabeg Sa'deddîn Köpek became sâhib-i devlet, that is, chief vizier, and the resolving and binding of the affairs of the Islamic country remained in Köpek's hands.
As stated in the Câmiu'd-Düvel, the sâhib-i a'zam Sa'deddîn Köpek, in order to consolidate his position and influence, appointed one of the famous emirs, Tâceddîn İbrâhim Pervâne Bey, governor of Ankara and so removed him from the circle of the sultanate. The famous emir Kemâleddîn Kâmyâr, who was the inspector of the army, he accused of plotting against the new padishah and killed. In short, those who opposed him he in every case either exiled or destroyed.
While Köpek was busy in Konya with such murders, in Amasya Baba İshak (the Greek Isaac) did not stand still; ceaselessly weaving intrigues from behind the curtain, he showered Konya with complaints in order to remove Berke Han, governor of Amasya, and, speaking of the Khwarazmians' oppressions, made the people cry out terribly.
The sâhib-i a'zam Sa'deddîn Köpek, who was in effect the Greek Isaac's hand in Konya, could not (fearing that he would rebel) dismiss Emîr Berke, governor of Amasya, all at once because of such complaints. As stated in the Târîh-i İbn Bîbî, under the pretext of discussing the condition of the country, he summoned Seyfeddîn Kır Han, emir of Sivas, to Konya in early 635 [1237-38]. When the said emir reached Konya he dismissed him and exiled him to Zemendû (Ziyâre) in Amasya; thus on the one hand he was intimidating Emîr Berke, governor of Amasya, and on the other he was easing the Greek Isaac's organisation in the Sivas and Tokat regions.
For Baba İshak Kefersûdî, through his deputies secretly placed in the livâs of Tokat, Canik, Çorum, Sivas and Karahisâr-ı Şarkî and their surroundings, first called the people living there to attach themselves to Baba İlyas Horasânî, and thus, having brought them into a circle of submission, gradually instilled in those who submitted the methods and principles of the Bâtınî and Rafidi Shiite sects and so drew them to himself.
According to the description of the Câmiu'd-Düvel, Baba İshak Kefersûdî outwardly showed asceticism and piety in an extremely hypocritical and cold manner; in the villages he shut himself in a cave and in Amasya in a room, admitting no one to him, and always lived alone. Because he bound the people to himself by leading them astray, he was known in the eyes of the common people as a "friend of God" (veliyyullâh). In everything he did he had drawn the people's attention by imitating Hasan bin Sabbah, the master of the Bâtınîs.
While Baba İshak Kefersûdî was doing away in Konya through Köpek with zealous and honourable persons who obstructed his enterprises, he must also have seen the governor of Ankara, Tâceddîn İbrâhim Bey, as an obstacle to his enterprises; as stated in the Câmiu'd-Düvel, the sâhib-i a'zam Sa'deddîn Köpek had the said governor brought to Konya on a charge of adultery and stoned, and in 636 [1238-39] unjustly killed that poor man.
After the killing of İbrâhim Bey, governor of Ankara, it was the turn of the Khwarazmians in Amasya to be punished. Baba İshak, who saw Berke Han, governor of Amasya, and the Khwarazmians as an obstacle to his enterprises, prepared the necessary complaints to remove them from Amasya, had it written to Konya that the Khwarazmians would rise up, and tried through Köpek to convince Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev.
In the end he succeeded in this too. As stated in the Târîh-i İbn Bîbî and the Câmiu'd-Düvel, Sultan Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev believed that the Khwarazmians would rebel; at the end of 636 [1239] he dismissed Emîr Berke Han from Amasya, appointed Zahîreddîn Hurşîd Bey, one of the emirs, governor of Amasya, ordered him to drive the Khwarazmians out of Amasya, and sent the said emir to Amasya with a military force.
The armed and fighting men among the Khwarazmians living in various parts of the Seljuk country numbered about twenty-five thousand in all, and they were extremely devout, brave and sturdy men. It was these Khwarazmians who were the Muslim champions fighting against Genghis alongside Celâleddîn Khwarazmshah. Süleyman Şah bin Kaya Alp, chief of the Kayı tribe, was counted among their emirs, and his tribe was also present.
Because the Seljuk Sultan Alâeddîn had had the Khwarazmians brought through the emir Kemâleddîn Kâmyâr and settled in the Seljuk country, they carried out their duties at the risk of their lives. In particular the attitude of the Tatars toward the Seljuks was very hostile, and Yani Komennus, who became king of Trebizond in 634 [1236-37], was watching for his chance. The expulsion of the Khwarazmians from the Seljuk country at the very time when the Seljuks most needed strength dragged the Seljuk government to destruction.

The Khwarazmians and the End of Kayırhan
After the collapse of the Khwarazmshah state under Mongol pressure, the Khwarazmian Kipchaks came to Anatolia, and Keykubad settled them by granting iqtas. The emir of the Khwarazmians serving in the Seljuk army was Kayırhan, and the person Hüsameddin calls Kır Han is most probably he. After Keykubad's death Köpek, seeing Kayırhan as a rival, persuaded Gıyâseddin Keyhusrev to do away with him. Kayırhan was imprisoned in the fortress of Zamantı (Pınarbaşı) and died in prison shortly afterwards (1237-38); whether the place Hüsameddin calls "exiled to Zemendû" is Zamantı is uncertain. Thereupon the Khwarazmians left Seljuk service and withdrew toward Urfa, began to plunder, defeated the Seljuk army under Kemâleddin Kâmyâr, and for a time lived independently in southeastern Anatolia. Here an important difference from Hüsameddin's account is seen. Berke Han's governorship of Amasya, and Hurşîd Bey's coming with troops and expelling the Khwarazmians, were not found in the sources examined. In the sources the rebellion of the Khwarazmians is tied to the imprisonment and death of Kayırhan and develops in the southeast. Hüsameddin, on the other hand, builds the event as one taking place in Amasya, developing out of Baba İshak's complaints and Köpek's incitement.
Süleyman Şah and the Kayı
The part of the entry that draws most attention is the account that Süleyman Şah, regarded as the ancestor of the Ottoman dynasty, came to the Amasya region in Berke Han's retinue and settled in Kayı Karyesi. The question of who Ertuğrul Gazi's father was is answered in two different ways in Ottoman sources. Ahmedî, Enverî and Karamânî Mehmed Paşa call him Gündüz Alp, while Oruç bin Âdil, Âşıkpaşazâde and Neşrî record him as Süleyman Şah. That the information given by the second group is not correct is today regarded as settled; the inscription "Osman bin Ertuğrul bin Gündüz Alp" on a coin of Osman Bey has strengthened this view. The coming of the Kayı to Anatolia, according to the historical account, was by way of Ahlat, Mardin and Pasinler near Erzurum. Süleyman Şah's coming to Amasya and the name Kayı Karyesi remain a tradition peculiar to the old Turkish histories on which Hüsameddin relies; he himself leaves it cautious by saying "it is thought".
Köpek, the Death of Keykubad and Kâmyâr
The chain of events Hüsameddin relates rests on the view that Keykubad's death was a contrivance of Baba İshak; he himself admits that there is no direct historical record for this view. It is recorded that Keykubad died on 4 Şevval 634 (31 May 1237) poisoned by game meat he had eaten and that this death suggests the possibility of an assassination; no record of Baba İshak's connection with this event was found in the writings examined. After Keykubad's death Gıyâseddin Keyhusrev was placed on the throne by his atabeg Köpek, and Köpek did away with important statesmen such as Altun-aba, Kâmyâr, Hüsameddin Kaymerî and Pervâne. Kâmyâr was killed after the victory of Samsat in the fortress of Gevele near Konya. Pervâne fled to Ankara and was stoned in Ankara on the charge of a relationship with a singing woman in Akşehir. That Pervâne and Kâmyâr were done away with by Köpek's hand is a point on which Hüsameddin's account and the sources agree.
