Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Mukaddime'de mezkûr olduğu üzere İçerişehir'de Ahi Sa'deddîn mahallesinin nâm-ı diğeri olan Subaşı Mûsâ Mahallesi sâhibi Mübârizeddîn Mûsâ bin Sevindük Bey'in mahdûmu İbrâhim Bey'in oğlu³⁸² olup [372] 636 evâsıtında Amasya vâlîsi oldukda müşkil bir işe me'mûr bulunuyor idi. Çünkü Harezmîler'i Amasya'dan ihrâc etmek ne kadar müşkil ise Baba'îler'in etvâr ve harekâtı da Harezmîler'den aşağı değil idi.

Sâbık Amasya vâlîsi Berke Hân, Konya hükûmetinin gösterdiği şiddetden zâten münfa'il olduğu bir zamânda akrabâsından Kır Hân'ın Zemendû'ya nefyinden ve biraz müddet sonra mahbûsen fevtinden pek ziyâde müte'essir oluyor, bütün Harezmîler ile memâlik-i Selçûkiyye'den çıkmasını tasmîm ediyordu.

Bu def'a azl ve ihrâcını Hurşîd Bey'in bir kuvve-i askeriyye ile gelmesinden anladıkda derhâl Amasya ve etrâfında meskûn olan Harezmîler'in idâresini deruhde ederek Hurşîd Bey'i karşıladı.

Şimdiye kadar Amasya hânkâhında hücre-nişîn-i inzivâ olan Baba İlyâs-ı Horasânî nâmına hareket eden Baba İshâk Kefersûdî, yirmi seneden beri gizlediği maksadını izhâr edecek zamânın hulûl eylediğine hükm ederek artık perde arkasından ortaya çıkıyordu. Hükûmet-i Selçûkiyye'nin hilâf-ı şerî'at mezâliminden, ümerânın şer'a muhâlif ahvâlinden dem vurarak kendisi şer'-i şerîfi icrâ etmeğe âlem-i gaybdan me'mûr olduğunu i'lân etmekle beraber otuz bin kadar müsellah Baba'îler'in başına geçip da'vâ-yı hilâfetle 637 evâ'ilinde Harezmîler'in Amasya'dan gitmesini müte'âkib hurûc eyledi.

Baba İshâk ibtidâ Baba İlyâs-ı Horasânî nâmına hareket ederek Harezmîler'in ahvâlini ta'kîb ediyordu. Harezmîler Amasya vâlîsini harben bozup Sivas hudûdundan çıkdıklarını haber aldıkda kendisini "Emîrü'l-mü'minîn Sadru'd-dünyâ ve'd-dîn İshâk" unvânıyla halîfe i'lân eylediğine kanâ'at etmiyordu. Rûh-ı Nebiyy-i Zî-şân'ın ibtidâ Hazret-i Alî'ye, ba'dehû kümmelîn vasıtasıyla kendisine hulûl eylediğini işâ'a ederek kâffe-i umûrunda daha ziyâde serbest olmak ve eşyânın ibâha ve tahrîmine salâhiyetdâr bulunmak için peygamberliğini i'lân edib birtakım ceheleyi sihr ve nîrencâtıyla inandırıyor, avâma karşı kendisine "fa''âlün limâ yürîd" sıfatını kazandırıyordu.

Yalnız Amasya [376] hâricindeki Şücâ'eddîn Tekûr Sinan Bey'in idâresinde bulunan müdâfi'ler ile harb etmeğe mecbûr idi.

Bu müdâfi'leri Lâdik emîri Kızoğlu Sirâceddîn Savcı bin Umur, Havza emîri Şemseddîn Mehmed bin Kunduz, Kedağra emîri Mübârizeddîn Îsâ bin İldaş ve ümerâdan el-Hâc Veliyyeddîn Umur bin Berekâtşâh Beyler ma'iyyet-i mevcûdeleriyle gelip takviye ediyorlar, bunların umûr-ı kazâsını Fahreddîn Alî el-Buhârî idâre ederek oldukça kuvvetli birkaç tabur hâlinde bulunuyorlardı.

Târîh-i İbni Bîbî'de mezkûr olduğu üzere Urfa ve Mar'aş taraflarından gelen yalancı peygamberin ümmet-i câhilesi, önlerine çıkan Muzaffereddîn Veled Alîşîr, Kerîmeddîn Germiyân Beyler'i mağlûb ederek havâlî-i Sivas'a tekarrüb etmişler idi. Yalancı peygamber, bunu haber aldıkda derhâl Kayseriyye üzerine hareket ederek yolda Şücâ'eddîn Tekur Sinan Bey'in teşkîl etdiği tabur ile harb ediyor, Muhammed ve Îsâ Beyler pek çok ehl-i îmân ile beraber şehîd oluyor, Baba'îler'in kesreti müdâfi'lerin şecâ'atine galebe ederek Tekûr Sinan ve İnâc Beyler diğer bir müdâfa'a taburu teşkîl etmek üzere ric'ate mecbûr oluyorlardı.

Hulâsa yalancı peygamber, birkaç tarafdan muvaffak olarak ileri hareketine devâm eylediği esnâda Konya'ya ilticâ edenlerin acı acı feryâdı, her tarafın âvâze-i istimdâdı Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev'i daldığı hâb-ı gafletden îkâz ederek Emîr Sa'deddîn lakab-ı ma'kûsu [377] altında tahaffuz eden sâhib-i a'zamı Köpek mel'ûnunun harekât-ı hâ'inânesine vâkıf oluyor, derhâl mel'ûnu diri diri demir kafes içine koyup âteşe karşı tutarak kemâl-i azâb içinde öldürüyor, kadîd olmuş cesedini hâmil olan kafesi de ibreten-li's-sâ'irîn kale bârûsuna asdırdıkdan sonra müstevfi'l-memâlik olan Mühezzebeddîn Alî bin el-Keşânî'yi sâhib-i a'zam nasb ediyordu.³⁸³

Sâhib-i a'zam Mühezzebeddîn Alî, Amasya vâlîsi Zahîreddîn Hurşîd Bey'i Sivas emâretine ve Hacı Mübârizeddîn Armağanşâh'ı Amasya vâlîliğine nasb ederek Hacı Armağanşâh'ı yalancı peygamber aleyhine serdâr ta'yîn ve ma'iyyetine Hurşîd Bey'le beraber bir kuvve-i kâfiye terfîk ve Kayseriyye üzerine i'zâm etdiği gibi Erzurum vâlîsi Sinâneddîn Yâkût, emîrü's-sevâhil Alâ'eddîn Alîşîr, Kastamonu hâkimi Celâleddîn Süleyman Şâh Beyler'e de bir an evvel Rûmlar'ın harbine hitâm verip Amasya üzerine hareket etmelerini emr eyledi.

In Modern English

As stated in the Introduction, he was the son of İbrâhim Bey, son of Mübârizeddîn Mûsâ bin Sevindük Bey, the owner of the Subaşı Mûsâ quarter, which is the other name of the Ahi Sa'deddîn quarter in İçerişehir. When he became governor of Amasya in mid-636 [1239] he was charged with a difficult task. For just as it was hard to drive the Khwarazmians out of Amasya, the attitude and actions of the Babaîs were no less than those of the Khwarazmians.

Berke Han, the previous governor of Amasya, already offended by the harshness shown by the Konya government, had been greatly affected by the exile of his relative Kır Han to Zemendû and his death in prison some time later, and had decided to leave the Seljuk country together with all the Khwarazmians.

This time, understanding from Hurşîd Bey's coming with a military force that he had been dismissed and expelled, he immediately took over the leadership of the Khwarazmians living in and around Amasya and met Hurşîd Bey.

Baba İshak Kefersûdî, who had until now been acting in the name of Baba İlyas-ı Horasânî, secluded in the Amasya khanqah, judged that the time had come to reveal the aim he had hidden for twenty years, and now came out from behind the curtain. He spoke of the oppressions of the Seljuk government contrary to the sharia and of the emirs' conduct contrary to the sharia, and proclaimed that he had been commissioned from the unseen world to apply the exalted sharia. Placing himself at the head of some thirty thousand armed Babaîs, he rose up in early 637 [1239-40], after the Khwarazmians had left Amasya, with a claim to the caliphate.

As stated in the Târîh-i İbn Bîbî, the Câmiu'd-Düvel and the Mufassal Kurûn-ı Cedîde, Baba İshak's strength was not limited to thirty thousand devotees (fedaî). The supporters he had prepared for himself in the Sümeysat and Kefersud regions had multiplied. When he made them rise too through the disciples he sent to the sanjaks of Urfa and Maraş, thousands of devotees set out from that side as well toward Amasya; the rebellious in the regions of Tokat, Sivas, Çorum and Karahisâr-ı Şarkî also rose. In short, the total of Baba İshak's supporters is estimated at more than fifty thousand.

It seems to me: if not all, then at any rate two thirds of this force, Köpek, the sâhib-i a'zam in Konya, included, were Christians and Greeks in the guise of recent converts to Islam. There was also a secret alliance between Yani Komennus, king of Trebizond, and Isaac Komennus, who was hiding under the name Baba İshak. For the later events show that there was a resemblance between their movements. For this reason it is impossible not to suppose that Isaac Komennus, whom we call Baba İshak, was acting in Amasya with the dream of reviving the influence and fortune of the Komnenos family, its government and its independence.

While Zahîreddîn Hurşîd Bey, governor of Amasya, was occupied with the Khwarazmians, Baba İshak's proclamation of his independence in Amasya under the veil of the sharia stunned everyone. Alâeddîn Alîşîr bin Selçûk bin Aydoğdu, emir of Canik, who was the emir of the coast (emîrü's-sevâhil), could not leave there since he was the guardian of the Greek frontier. For Yani Komennus, king of Trebizond, was also about to cross the Islamic frontier.

Baba İshak at first acted in the name of Baba İlyas-ı Horasânî and watched the situation of the Khwarazmians. When he learned that the Khwarazmians had defeated the governor of Amasya in battle and left through the Sivas border, he was not content with proclaiming himself caliph with the title "Emîrü'l-mü'minîn Sadrü'd-dünyâ ve'd-dîn İshak". He spread the word that the Prophet's spirit had indwelt first Hazrat Ali and then himself through perfected persons (kümmelîn), and, in order to be freer in all his affairs and to hold authority in making things lawful and forbidden, he proclaimed his prophethood. He made a number of ignorant people believe by sorcery and conjuring, and gained for himself before the people the attribute "fa''âlün limâ yürîd" (the Qur'anic phrase meaning "He does what He wills").

When this claim spread in Amasya, beginning with Baba İlyas, sheikh of the khanqah, among the scholars Bedreddîn İbrâhim el-Kımârî, judge of Amasya, Tâceddîn Yûsuf et-Tebrîzî, professor of the Mes'ûdiyye Madrasa, and Fahreddîn Alî el-Buhârî, professor of the Halife Madrasa; and among the emirs Seyfeddîn Haydar, son of Bedreddîn Ebû Bekir, Bedreddîn İbrâhim, brother of Halifet Gazi, his son Şücâeddîn Tekur Sinan, Seyfeddîn Salâr, son of Nûreddîn Tugrak Bey, and his son-in-law Şerefeddîn İnâc Bey, were trying to warn Muslim public opinion by defending the sharia and the government.

The false prophet Baba İshak, regarding their actions as very harmful to his enterprises, drew the sword in Amasya and martyred the judge, İbrâhim Bey, and very many believers whom he saw as opposed to his enterprises. To escape the false prophet's wrath, Tâceddîn et-Tebrîzî fled to Konya, and Şerefeddîn Muhammed bin Osmân es-Simrî and Şemseddîn Muhammed bin Kadı İbrâhim el-Kımârî to Damascus, together with very many people, while Baba İlyas Horasânî hid at the place called Çat Bükü, where he had a farm. Some of the scholars and emirs also left Amasya and formed a battalion made up of very many patriots, and defended their religion and their homeland.

Those who had fled from Amasya to Konya tried to complain to Sultan Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev about the false prophet and to seek help, but because of the sâhib-i a'zam Köpek they could find no way. Meanwhile the false prophet Baba İshak, having brought the regions of Tokat, Sivas and Karahisâr-ı Şarkî under his disciples' control, was preparing to march on Konya and awaiting the arrival of the devotees coming from the Urfa and Maraş regions.

For since Yani Komennus, king of Trebizond, was moving on Canik by land and sea, the false prophet judged that Alâeddîn Alîşîr Bey, emir of the coast, and Sultan Celâleddîn Süleyman Şah, son of Devletşah and ruler of Kastamonu and Sinop, could not leave those places, and tried to carry out his plan accordingly. Only outside Amasya he had to fight the defenders under the command of Şücâeddîn Tekûr Sinan Bey.

These defenders were supported with their available forces by Kızoğlu Sirâceddîn Savcı bin Umur, emir of Lâdik, Şemseddîn Mehmed bin Kunduz, emir of Havza, Mübârizeddîn Îsâ bin İldaş, emir of Kedağra, and, among the emirs, Hacı Veliyyeddîn Umur bin Berekâtşah Bey. Fahreddîn Alî el-Buhârî managed the affairs of their district, and they stood in several fairly strong battalions.

As stated in the Târîh-i İbn Bîbî, the ignorant followers of the false prophet who came from the Urfa and Maraş regions defeated Muzaffereddîn Veled Alîşîr and Kerîmeddîn Germiyân Bey, who stood in their way, and had approached the Sivas region. When the false prophet learned of this he marched at once on Kayseri, and on the way fought the battalion formed by Şücâeddîn Tekur Sinan Bey. Muhammed Bey and Îsâ Bey were martyred with very many believers; the multitude of the Babaîs overcame the defenders' courage, and Tekûr Sinan and İnâc Bey had to withdraw to form another defensive battalion.

In short, while the false prophet continued his advance with success on several sides, the bitter cries of those who had taken refuge in Konya and the calls for help rising from every direction awakened Gıyâseddîn Keyhusrev from the sleep of heedlessness into which he had sunk. He learned of the treacherous actions of the accursed sâhib-i a'zam Köpek, who hid under the epithet "Emîr Sa'deddîn"; he at once had that accursed man put alive into an iron cage and held over a fire and killed in great torment, and had the cage carrying his roasted corpse hung on the fortress tower as a warning to others. Then he appointed Mühezzebeddîn Alî bin el-Keşânî, the state treasurer (müstevfi'l-memâlik), as sâhib-i a'zam.

The sâhib-i a'zam Mühezzebeddîn Alî appointed Zahîreddîn Hurşîd Bey, governor of Amasya, emir of Sivas and Hacı Mübârizeddîn Armağanşah governor of Amasya, and named Hacı Armağanşah commander (serdar) against the false prophet. He sent him toward Kayseri with a sufficient force joined by Hurşîd Bey, and also ordered Sinâneddîn Yâkût, governor of Erzurum, Alâeddîn Alîşîr, emir of the coast, and Celâleddîn Süleyman Şah Bey, ruler of Kastamonu, to put an end to the war with the Greeks as soon as possible and move on Amasya.

How the Babaî Revolt Is Told in the Sources

The Babaî uprising is regarded as the greatest Turkmen revolt of Anatolian Seljuk history. In present-day research the starting place of the event is shown not as Amasya but as the Kefersud region near Adıyaman. Baba İshak armed the Turkmens there, took control of the area, captured Adıyaman, Gerger and Kâhta, then defeated in Malatya the Seljuk subaşı Alişiroğlu Muzafferüddin, and afterwards the force he regathered around Elbistan. The capture and plunder of Sivas is also a link in this advance. On this news Sultan Gıyâseddin Keyhusrev left Konya and withdrew to the Kubâdâbâd Palace on the shore of Lake Beyşehir, and recalled the eastern army in Erzurum. Hüsameddin's account, on the other hand, places Amasya at the centre of the event and ties the beginning of the uprising to the Khwarazmians' departure from the city.

The Role of Baba İlyas

The greatest difference in the entry is in the position of Baba İlyas. Hüsameddin shows him at the head of those defending the sharia and the government against the false prophet. In present-day studies, however, it is Baba İlyas who planned the uprising; Baba İshak, as his deputy, conducted the administration in the field. Studies based on the sources note that the Turkmens called Baba İlyas Baba Resul and that the claim of prophethood is attached to him. For a long time Baba İshak was known as the leader of the revolt; the basis of this view is a single account by İbn Bîbî. It should also be remembered that this same İbn Bîbî, as a historian close to the Seljuk court, wrote unfavourably about the Turkmens.

Numbers and the Composition of the Crowd

Hüsameddin gives the force with Baba İshak first as thirty thousand and then as fifty thousand in all. There is no firm figure in the sources; one study notes that the sources do not give a sound number. Abu'l-Faraj records the Seljuk army as 60 thousand horsemen and the number of Turkmen fighters as 6 thousand. Ahmet Yaşar Ocak notes that the crowd consisted not only of nomadic Turkmens but of villagers of central and southeastern Anatolia, some of them Christian. Hüsameddin's estimate of "two thirds Christian and Greek" is, in his own words, an inference; the claim that Baba İshak descended from the Komnenos line and made a secret alliance with the king of Trebizond is also not supported by the sources.

When Did Köpek Die?

In Hüsameddin's account Köpek is put into an iron cage and killed by a move of the sultan while the revolt is under way. In his footnote, however, he says that the false prophet's catastrophe began after Köpek's execution. Sâdeddin Köpek's death is dated around December 1238 (636), while the Babaî revolt broke out in 1240. In this respect the statement in the footnote agrees with the sources, whereas the flow of the main text gives the impression that Köpek was still in power during the revolt. Hüsameddin writes that Köpek was put alive into an iron cage and killed over a fire. In the entry on Köpek, however, it is related that he was wounded during a banquet and fled to the sultan's wine cellar, where he was killed by the cupbearer and his men, and that his body was put into an iron cage and hung on the fortress tower of the Kubâdâbâd Palace.

The Defenders of Amasya

The long list of defenders that Hüsameddin gives, that is, Bedreddin İbrahim el-Kımârî, Tâceddîn Yûsuf et-Tebrîzî, Tekûr Sinan, İnâc and the others, shows the local ruling and learned circle of Amasya. Some of these names were introduced in earlier entries. In the phrase in the text "Halifet Gazi's brother Bedreddin İbrahim, his son Şücâeddin Tekur Sinan", to whom "his son" belongs is unclear; in the next entry Tekûr Sinan is referred to as "Halifet Gâzizâde". According to Hüsameddin's footnote, Zahîreddîn Hurşîd Bey's lineage is written in this way because he was a witness to the Halifet Gazi Endowment Deed in 622 [1225]; Mühezzebeddîn Alî was also the son of the former judge of Amasya Tâceddîn Muhammed el-Keşânî and son-in-law of Mu'îneddîn Abdullah bin Sılamış el-Müstevfi'l-Gümüşî, who died in 632 [1234-35]. None of this information could be verified in the sources consulted.
