In Modern English

He is from Amasya. He is the son of Hacı Şerif Mehmed Efendi, son of Süleyman Ağa, the steward of the harem, one of the scribes of the Imperial Council. He became known as "Gürcüzâde" because he was the son of the daughter of Gürcüzâde Seyyid Halil Pasha.

At first he stayed in Halil Pasha's household. Then he entered the chancery of the Imperial Council and was trained there. Later he became kethüda (steward) to his maternal uncle Hâfız Ali Pasha, and in 1223 [1808-09], while the said pasha was residing in Bursa, he came to Amasya. While a member of the council of notables, he died in 1227 [1812-13].

Family Ties

According to the text, Eşref Abdurrahman Bey is linked on his father's side with the chancery of the Imperial Council and the palace milieu, and on his mother's side with Gürcüzâde Halil Pasha. It may be thought that his maternal uncle Hâfız Ali Pasha was Halil Pasha's son, but this is an inference; Hüsameddin does not write it explicitly. In the next entry it is written that Eşref Mehmed Bey, grandson of Hacı Şerif Mehmed Efendi, was also raised in Hâfız Ali Pasha's household and came to Amasya in 1247 (1831-32) upon the pasha's death. From this it is understood that Hâfız Ali Pasha died in 1247. Since Eşref Mehmed Bey's father Süleyman Şâkir Bey is also named as the son of the same Hacı Şerif Mehmed Efendi, according to Hüsameddin's records the two Eşrefs are uncle and nephew.

Other Sources

In the searches made on Gürcüzâde Halil Pasha, Hâfız Ali Pasha and the Gürcüzâde family of Amasya, no verifiable record of these names was found. The practice of the council of notables in Amasya at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and Eşref Abdurrahman Bey's place in that council, are also not described separately in the sources read.
