In Modern English
He is the son of Emir Hüsâmeddin Hüseyin Çelebi, one of the venerable seyyids of Amasya, who died in 888 [1483-84]; Hüseyin Çelebi was the son of Emir Sadreddin Mehmed, who was the son of Hüseyin, who was the son of Ali el-Horasânî el-Beğavî. He is also the nephew of the mufti of Amasya, Seyyid İbrahim Efendi, famous as "Koca Emir." On the back of a book that passed to him by inheritance from his father, a signature was seen in Arabic meaning "In the time of the weakest of the servants of the Almighty God, Muhammed Eşref son of Hüseyin son of Muhammed el-Beğavî." Having studied in Amasya, he became a teacher giving public lessons (ders-i âm) and a madrasa professor. In the period when his uncle held the office of fatwa, he was the fatwa steward and professor of the Yörgüç Pasha Madrasa and became quite well known. He became one of the seven emirs. In 918 [1512-13] he was transferred to Istanbul together with his uncle. Later, in the time of Sultan Süleyman the Lawgiver, he returned to Amasya and died in 927 [1520-21]. He was a scholar, a poet and a man of maturity. He is buried in the Üçler Neighborhood. His son is Şerîf Ahmed Çelebi. His other son is Abdülhamîd Çelebi. Internal Consistency of the Line of Descent
The signature on a book is especially important in this entry. Hüsameddin reproduces the signature as written in Arabic and gives its meaning in a footnote. The chain "Muhammed Eşref son of Hüseyin son of Muhammed el-Beğavî" in the signature agrees with the line given at the beginning of the entry: Eşref's father is Hüseyin Çelebi, and Hüseyin Çelebi's father is Sadreddin Mehmed. Thus the line Hüsameddin gives is supported by a record that came from Eşref's own hand. Hüsameddin does not write in which library the book is kept or in whose hands; the signature itself could not be verified elsewhere in the sources read.
His Uncle and "Koca Emir"
Eşref is the nephew of the mufti of Amasya, "Koca Emir" İbrahim Efendi. According to the text, while his uncle was serving as mufti, Eşref held the post of fatwa steward and taught at the Yörgüç Pasha Madrasa. In 918 (1512-13) the two were transferred to Istanbul together. The reason for this transfer is not written in the text.
Other Sources on This Man
No information was found in other sources on Eşref Mehmed Çelebi, his father Hüseyin Çelebi, his uncle Koca Emir İbrahim Efendi, or the group called the "seven emirs." The record in the Şakâyık translation on which Hüsameddin relies could not be read directly in this work either; the information in the text is given only through Hüsameddin's report.
